do i need a watch winder?

i do not own a luxury watch till my wife bought me a gmt TT recently. I felt it was too flashy and will keep it in the safe for long. Plan is to keep it for my son and might probably wear it once or twice a year.

question is do i need a watch winder? sorry for the noob question.

Thanks

The only good reason I can think of for owning a watch winder is if you have a watch that is so difficult to set that keeping it wound is the only feasible option.

Your son will notice if you wear it or not. To him it will either be a watch, or a piece of you. My very humble suggestion is wear it, or sell it. Leave your son something that was meaningful to you, and alas your legacy continues...

My thoughts exactly. I let my son pick which watch I wear every morning as our daily routine.

Couldn’t hurt, but if you’re not gonna wear it then I don’t see the point in a watch winder

No you won’t need the winder.

Winders are a convenience for avoiding having to regularly reset a watch that has run down. That usually happens when someone owns multiple watches and the rotation takes 3-4 days between each model’s use.

In your case, you’d only be inconvenienced a few times per year. Just not worth it methinks.

But if you’d allow me to change the topic to natural winders, I’d like to opine on a winder you should employ daily. Namely your wrist upon which the GMT deserves to be worn daily.

Your wife will have pride each day she sees her precious present gracing your wrist. You will have the honor of displaying the future heirloom to your son. He will gain the respect day-by-day with which he will accept it one day.

All together a more fitting winder is at your command at no extra charge. And the side benefits are better for the whole family.

Like others have said. A winder would be a waste of money. I would say take the thing out more than a couple times a year however.

No one needs a watch winder. You need oxygen, food, and water. Just saying.

I have one for several reasons. Keeps the watch safe, I don’t need to set times; I grab and go. And I was told from my AD a few weeks back on my last purchase (I asked them their thoughts on winders) that it keeps them well maintained and do not need to service them as frequent as one that is not placed in a winder. I believe Rolex calls for a 7 year service. AD told me with a winder that can push to 10 years.

Trade it for something you going to wear like Sub or Explorer.

I was always told this was to maintain proper lubricity as the fluids would collect if the movement stopped.

I think they put excess wear into a movement.

If you aren't going to wear the watch you don't need a winder. Then again, if you aren't going to wear it you don't need a watch. Wear it and enjoy it. It is not too fancy any more than your wife's wedding ring is too fancy (and probably worth more than your watch).

I have one and like it. Get one that has settings for how many rotations and bi directional.

And if you decide to keep the watch there is no point to keep in wound in a safe... watches are meant to wear.

I’ve got two watches and a versa winder for two. It was $89 and works great. I wear both watches enough that the winder isn’t needed. However, it’s a great place to keep the watches safe when I’m not wearing them. And I always have it if needed. Just my two cents.

A winder is not going to extend the service period, quite the opposite actually.

OP: you do not need a winder but do wind the watch occasionally (1-2 times a month) to keep the lubricants frequently in motion.

In my experience women are smart and she bought a TT for a reason. Wear it it is not too flashy and if someone comments on it be aloof and forget about it. It won't mean anything to your son if you don't wear it.

If you don't want to wear it, sell it and buy your wife and son something nice.

Save your money on the winder and trade the GMT for something you will wear. Bequeathing something you rarely wore to your kid is no different than just buying him a new watch - there’s little emotional association to the watch. Now if you traded it for something that you wore everyday and then gave it to him...

Would like to see ADs evidence on using a winder versus one wound only once a month. Please have AD show movement wear comparison accordingly, as what s/he is saying there's constant wear when using a winder. Agree fluids should be 'spun' now and then, yet not daily if no need to.

Winding once a month should suffice imho, plus the moment is subjected to far less wear than constantly being on a winder.

Again, please ask dealer to show proof of what s/he is saying.

Between my wife and I we have three autos so I do have a winder. We both like the grab and go aspect of it.

Wear the watch. Please.

You do not need a winder.
