"patented" milled off inside case back, 5513

Years ago I found an article online that detailed why some case backs had the word "patented" milled off around the time Rolex had the patent expire. The cases prior to this said patented, the ones after did not. Apparently a few on the assembly line simply had the case backs milled to take that word off.

My Google-Fu is weak but if anyone knows the article I'm referring to, I'd really like to find it again.

I'm the original owner of this one, purchased new in January of 1984, I've attached photos of the case back to show what I'm referring to, as well as the watch in question. This watch was initially serviced by Rolex/NY and subsequently other independent watchmakers over the years. If serial number matters, it's 73664XX

Thanks

What is your question? The milling of the “patented” is correct for certain serials ranges.

I believe that was on VRF a decade ago.

Surely this is exactly the sort of question that a forum like this should be full of. You’re rather rude. OP hope you get the right link or someone answers directly.

On reflection, you’re right.

Apologies OP, I genuinely didn’t understand the question. And what I thought was a sarcastic reply to my original comment was met with a badly aimed sarcastic response.

Alrighty, now that the fun and games have commenced, does anyone know of a link that could direct me to a more concise explanation of these milled case backs?

I know when they occurred. I know why they occurred. But my "I know why" account is hardly authoritative.

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks and have a nice weekend

It was 1980-82 (6.2-7 million) Rolex let their patent slip/or it ran out and they thought they'd just have a blank space until they changed their mind in 82... so for that year we got no case engraving of either REGISTERED DESIGN or ORIG.ROLEX DESIGN on the north lug.

Per TuRo on VRF

Very cool watch. Interesting variation.

Antrolexsub, since you are such a leader, how about you contribute $ and become a pledge member. Just so you are on equal footing with those you have been rude to.

On the Otter hand he did post a gracious apology, something you don’t see very often nowadays, especially on Internet forums

I’m not wanting to be a leader of anything. However you make a fair point about becoming a pledge member which I’ll sort now.

Apologies to Filipćo also, your reply was justified.
