5513 Dial question
Hi chaps
Everyone is pretty sure that the gilt dial era on the subs ceased around late 1966. However, I found on the web today this french ad, dated 1966, on which apparentely I see a metres first, early matte dial. Is this correct?? Or it is a gilt and I am seeing too much? Your help is highly appreciated. Kindest regards. Ps. please, note the price: 750 french francs. |

Beelzy, thanks for your answer. I would call this one more of the Rolex mysteries. As many collectors and reputable sellers say no one is absolutely sure when dials, hands, bezels, etc, were changed to the newer models..we have a mere estimative. I would really love to know from someone inside the rolex organisation these information...but they just refuse to confirm.

:-) Ads are notorious for mixing years, photos and artists renditions. They are more mixed up than Rolex's own use of parts imho. thanks for sharing the ad too. m

looking at the VRF dial archive there are plenty of 1.5/1.6m serial 5513 with matt dials
so the transition happened in '66 and for an advert I suppose they'd want the latest newest thing? |

According to the oysterworld chart, 1966 ranges from 1289727 to 1557XXX...so, perhaps the transitional period envolves other serial numbers, maybe as early as 1.3/1.4...As I said before, no one knows for sure these exact figures...
