F.P. Journe Octa Automatique Reserve Havana

After some serious consolidation of my collection, I’m “this close” to purchasing an F.P. Journe Octa Automatique Reserve in platinum with the Havana dial. I think it’ll fit in nicely. Yay or nay?

It'll be the crown of the collection. It's a very nice watch.

Add some diversity to the Patek mix. Love the choice. You would be joining a small club of watch owners with that purchase.

Check with Journe about an update to this watch. I thought I read somewhere that there was a recent update on the dial side (marginally larger date windows, some other slight adjustments in layout). I could be smoking something but at the very least you want to check.

And yeah, it’ll be a very nice addition to what will be a pretty solid 6 watch box.

Yay. Will fit in well there. I think I love my Journes more than my PPs

Yes it would. You are of course missing an AP in that magnificent collection.

Me too. Eventually I’ll replace it with the boutique edition. Going for brand diversity now so need to think about Lange and AP.

You cannot go wrong with Journe. I cannot emphasize this enough. You have a great collection but the FPJ will be a star.

How will history treat FPJ? I think good. But It’s so new and tied to one guy. PP by contrast ..... Would love thoughts?

I have no idea. I remember when Frank Muller was wildly popular.

Okay, so FPJ is no FM, but no way for me to crystal ball this. I will say the watches are unique, rare, and spectacular. He has also done some interesting things like the first resonance, first 1/100 chrono, first instantaneous QP, etc. So, there are real horological chops behind the brand. I tend to think they will hold up very well if he gets the right succession plan in place, but who knows. As long as he is alive I think his watches are going to be wildly popular, like now, or at least niche popular (like 3 years ago), because I think there is enough buzz out there to be self-sustaining, but beyond that, who knows? In 25 years nobody may know what FPJs are.

Love the Journe Octas so a yes from me. Maybe sell one of the PPs for a RO or Lange as well.

Great thoughts. I don’t even know what frank Muller is (gonna research) but sounds like it demonstrates my fear: flash in the pan, trend, oddity fixation and then — poof. Gonzo!

I got bit by the journe big recently and have added a 38mm Octa Lune in platinum and the chronometre bleu. I think Journe’s are just so unique and special and am absolutely loving them. Haven’t worn any of my others recently as these are just so special.

I just looked at muller watches. I love these FPJ but I don’t wanna own a FM or other forgotten brand in 15-20. For me, for this investment grade, I may just stick with PP, which are equally stunning.

FPJ is partially owned by Chanel. I'm not too worried.

I think FPJ has a MUCH better chance of sticking than FM, but yes, if you really want to ensure the brand is there than PP is a safer bet. That said, FPJ is much more special, to me, than any PP.

I'm not either, and I think it's pretty likely that FPJ sticks for the long term, but who knows. The watch Gods are fickle.

They certainly have an exceptional feel and look to them. And there’s something so cool about a breakaway winner who bucks decades old watch houses and kills it! I’m torn for sure.

For you personally, what makes it more special than a PP?

Love FPJ, but I'd go with a manual wind movement. They are glorious. A CS in pt would do the trick.

I just like the design ethos more. FPJ didn't have decades of tradition to cope with. For many, the success of PP and the "look" of PP are what are so compelling. For me, it's almost more of a burden to them. FPJ just kind of blew it all up and started making top notch watches with a design DNA nobody had really ever seen before. I also like that they only produce 600-700 watches per year. I feel like part of a club when I put one on. AD told me my RG Salmon Centigraphe only had around 16 ever made. Just very very special watches made in incredibly small numbers. I also like supporting an independent. The entire experience just resonates with me. My only limitation is money. If money was no object, I would own a Resonance and an Optimum. For sure.

Yay! I tried one on in the LA Boutique with Mr. Journe’s brother. About a year ago. If I knew then what I know now, I might have bought it! If you can get it, get it!
