New Royal Oak Release - 34mm

Looks like AP launched a new 34mm Selfwinding Royal Oak quietly. I can’t post a link since I have under 10 post but you’ll see it under the Royal Oak tab on the AP site.

I wonder if we’ll see anymore new releases given the situation with Covid?

Nice. Particularly like the light dial. Also, I hope to see ROC with in house caliber used in the 11.59.

What is this calibre 5800?

Is it new? What is it based on? 3120?

Looks like a new movement as well, not currently used in any AP’s that I know of or that are listed currently on the site.

Man, no pumping the brakes for AP on new releases. Just seem to be plowing through as though nothing is going on. Would respect them a little bit more if they took a more restrained approach like PP and Rolex but what do I know?

New movement has some fascinating stats when comparing the new 5800 vs. 3120...

Diameter: 26.6 mm vs. 23.3 mm (-12%)
Jewels: 40 vs. 28 (-30%)
Parts: 280 vs. 189 (-33%)
Frequency: 3 Hz vs. 4 Hz (+33%)
Power Reserve: 60 hrs vs. 50 hrs. (-17%)

I personally love how the seconds hand sweeps at 4 Hz -- reminds me of the El Primero. And I'm impressed they were able to increase the frequency while still maintaining > 2 days of power reserve. Can't wait to learn more about this one!

Wondering if/when AP will make an official announcement about this.

I’m guessing that this pushes the 15450 as more of an option targeted to men as opposed to a unisex model, similar to how the 14790 was

Wow, looks like ladies have more options now compared to only having the quartz.

Although small for some men, I do think the 15450 is a men’s watch - it does look too big on most women in my opinion and so I think this new 34mm is a great addition to the line

This makes me happy because it gives me hope that they may release a 39mm dual time again...

33-34mm is in my opinion not undersized when it comes to a RO for women, it's not so small it becomes "un-sporty"

I think you’ve got that backwards lol but I agree. Falls in line with most of their catalogue though.

Yeah... I mean, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but no. I’ve seen several women wearing the 33mm and it’s perfectly fine.

Now that I think of it, I don’t think I see posts where you’re not complaining about something lol

I guess this means the 37mm 15450 is due for an update. Both the size up and the size down have more modern movements...

I didn't mean that watch is, sorry. I was speaking to their offerings in general seem to be in that pairing. Just seems so odd to me that they would make the men's 15400 and then 15500 41mm, keep the 15202 "because it's the original and true to design" and then go the other direction with ladies. Just seems very strange.

Did not mean it wouldn't fit fine, of course it would. I just don't understand what they are doing over there, bigger and bigger for the men's offerings and then this. I'm just not impressed with AP at all as of past several years, probably why you see me complaining in here. I wish they would make something for men in 39mm that wasn't the jumbo.

Change your location on the site to Singapore and it gives you prices in SGD, the SS model without diamonds is about $25k sgd from memory

Especially strange since they've explicitly mentioned that the 41mm Code is a unisex watch.
