Icon20 Omega Seamaster Professional or Speedmaster Professional

Hi All,

My current collection consists of a two tone Rolex Datejust and a Tudor Black Bay. I’m looking to add a third watch and am stuck between the new blue Seamaster and the hesalite Speedmaster. I love the bright colors and water resistance of the Seamaster (would love to wear the watch while traveling), but love the history of the Speedmaster and its timeless design. Would appreciate any thoughts.

For me, without hesitation, I go for the Speedmaster

I thought this forum was for Rolex watches only.

Anyways, Seamaster and Speedmaster are two different watches.

My personal vote goes to Seamaster.

Its now a classic in its own right and perhaps the most recognized watch after the Submariner/Datejust etc due to signature bracelet and HEV.

It also has the beautiful blue dial (don't care for grey/white) that adds a bit of colour to one's collection. It looks stunning on bracelet as well as strap. Go and try one for yourself.

As much as I love the speedy, its a manual wind watch and that always gets me since I am so used to Automatic.

There are also rumours of Speedy being discontinued and then being upgraded with 3861 and a more premium finish.

Good luck with your decision.

I've owned examples of both, currently own a Speedy Pro, that's my vote. It's a wonderful and iconic watch.

The BB is your diver. Therefore get the Speedy.

Firstly, both great watches so no wrong decision.
But those two watches couldn’t be more different. The Speedmaster has hardly changed since landing on the moon fifty years ago, while the Seamaster is the latest of a steady evolution both aesthetically and technically.

You have the Black Bay, so if you are craving diversity then the Seamaster may feel too similar being a dive watch. But that’s really all the similarity; they are very different. Seamaster is a great travel watch for all occasions, solid water resistance, and also has that jumping hour hand. Much more ‘fun’ watch than the speedmaster in my opinion, but the blue is still very versatile and can be dressed up.

Speedmaster has such history behind it that it too makes a great all-round watch. For me the chrono complication is little more than a novelty, but a fun novelty non the less. The dive bezel makes a more convenient timer in most situations I encounter. Very classic choice.

For me, it’s the Seamaster.

Also, this should be moved to the Omega discussion section

Seamaster is a much more advanced and modern watch than the Speedmaster. Plus you get a date and REAL water resistance. Speedmaster has all the history, but the Seamaster is a much better watch in my opinion.

Hesalite Speedmaster absolutely. I don’t like the aesthetics of the Seamaster, although I own and love the Seamaster 300 which is just a superb vintage homage.

I forgot to mention that Seamaster makes your Tudor obsolete. I know thats heresy on Rolex forum but IMHO its a superior and better built/refined product that the Tudor BB.

I have owned both and much prefer the Seamaster. I currently own the white dial and it's awesome. I don't dive, but I wouldn't even wash dishes in the Speedmaster. No worries with water or any environment with the Seamaster.

Just keep in mind one is a manual the other isn’t.
The Hesalite speedmaster is a beast for straps looks brilliant on just about anything.
The new seamaster movement is top notch and looks decent on a bracelet or rubber.

Can’t go wrong with either, flip the Tudor and grab both ;)

Seamaster styles come and go and evolve. My vote goes to the classic hesilite speedy. Unchanged even when everything around you changes.

I have both (albeit the older blue Seamaster) the Speedmaster wins hands down. In fact its possibly my favourite watch.

I really don't like the bracelet on the Seamaster (I wear mine on an Omega shark mesh).

As you pointed out the poor water resistance on the Speedmaster is the only negative, but you have other watches to travel with. In terms of the manual wind that some people have mentioned, its no hardship at all and I actually like winding it.

In any case, do not buy from an Omega Boutique, I got a 35% discount buying new from a grey.

I'm really not a chrono fan but I really like my Subs. I have a decent collection of Rolex's, Tudors and Omegas and the Seamaster to me could be a one and only piece and is certainly one of the best Subs out there bar none and one of the most comfortable on the wrist.
Also agree, No Boutiques, they are not aggressive like an independent Omega AD when it comes to discounts.

Speed master definitely. Although SMP is a fine watch...it has the wart....once seen, never unseen!

I would trade the BB58 for a Seamaster and buy the Speedy. A little more money but not much.

Blue Seamaster ceramic 300m gets my vote.

Wearing mine right now on rubber strap, extremely comfortable.

Perfect summer watch. It's fun, sporty, it's vibrant, it's appropriately flashy/eye-catching, pops beautifully. I think it has a much better movement, guaranteed to be +0 to +6 seconds (and often better)-- meaning it shouldn't be losing time, which I highly value. I also value its amagnetic properties, to 15000 Gauss, that's best-in-the-industry. The Coaxial movement also has robust shock protection.

Personally, I think the SMP is more iconic and recognizable than the Speedy. I'm sure that sounds like heresy among the watch community and the speedmaster has the more storied history and heritage, however these facts are mostly known to us "watch people". I'm willing to bet that 1.) the average person doesn't know or care about the "first watch on the moon", and 2.) the SMP is more recognizable visually due to its bracelet and enormous flashy clasp, the HEV, and general look/construction, all of which are plainly visible from afar.

For what it's worth, I own a Tudor BB58 as well. I think the BB58 is more conservative in appearance. I appreciate it greatly for what it is: a fantastic watch with great vintage appeal, refined construction, comfortable size and fit, and superb in-house movement. Only thing I dislike is that mine loses 2 sec per day (not bad overall to still be in +2 / -2 range, but I hate losing time).

Anyway, they are different watches with different vibes, but I think it could make sense to own both in a collection, even if they are both divers.

If you need water resistance, Seamaster. Otherwise, Speedmaster each and every day.

A lot of good comments/advice here already. I'll add my recommendation for the Speedy Pro. I love the sapphire sandwich (hate scratches/wanted display back), but the Hesalite is the classic way to go for sure. Looks GREAT on a dark brown leather strap.

Plus, would give you a nice Land/Sea/Air collection!

Depends on your daily driver.

Is it a submarine or a spaceship.

Do you prefer an automatic or a manual movement.

Can you handle winding the tiny crown on the Omega every day?

At the end of the day which one do YOU like best?

I also chose the sapphire sandwich and my son now enjoys ownership as he began his engineering degree on his eighteenth birthday in 2008.

Speedy since you already own a diver. Though you can’t go wrong either way. I own both the blue SMP and a 114060 and wear them both.

I vote for the Seamaster. You already have a black dial watch. Add some color. Plus, I’m not a chrono fan. Never even wear my Daytona. Would sell it if I was brave enough to get over the fact that I wouldn’t get another.

I have/had the previous generation SMP (was stolen by my wife) and I love it. Any travel pictures of me over the last 10 years, it’s in it.
