I'm interested in YM, but how it relates to yachts?
Some say that they are both expensive, but if that is the only reason I think every luxury watches could be named that.

The yachtmaster is the nicest of Rolex's sport watches. It has polished center links, solid center links, and polished lugs. So the term "yachtmaster" seems to be well suited.

Well IMHO thats the main reason just the Bling factor even the Yachtmaster 11 although it has a start timer.In the real world most true sports yachtsmen would use some sort of electronic timer when racing.

The Yachtmaster has been referred to as a blinged Sub, as all of the parts are completely interchangeable, although it does us platinum in the baasic model and the lugs are shaped differently; you can still interchange bezels, movements etc..

The relationship to Yachts, or Yachting is the bezel, which on a YM is bi-directional and so it can be used to count-down to the start of a yachting regatta race more easily than the Sub, which only turns one way - very inconvenient for keeping track of the minute hand in a CW direction.. ...

It is not a Diver as you are supposed to stay on the top of the boat, so it is only waterproof to the Oyster standard 100 meters...

I once read a cool, "secret" history of the Yachtmaster online somewhere. The basic thrust was that Rolex planned to release a watch called the Yachtmaster years ago, but it never made it into production.

Then, Rolex decided to update the Sub-date in the 1990s. Their design team came up with a product that was fantastic, but the folks in charge were afraid it was just TOO radical a departure from the Sub. Instead, they decided to release this new watch as a separate product. The old Yachtmaster name was a perfect fit--it suggested the sea-faring origins of the watch, but also the luxury looks of the new design.

Of course, I don't know how true any of this is, but it seems to fit.

The Yachtmaster line is an interesting piece.. It is the only Sport model released in 3 different sizes, the 40mm, the midsize 35mm, and the ladies 29mm... Plus all the gold, TT, and Platinum variations. When they "update" this one, it is much more of an effort than just a single sized 40mm sport piece....

The bezel has a count down timer to begin a yacht race. They yacht 2 does the count down mechanically. So now you know the relation and that there is one.

Had lunch at the golf clubhouse of the resort where I live and tried to do some Rolex spotting. Plenty of them around. One that kept me wondering what something that looked like a TT sub but with a champagne dial and a full gold bezel. Well, finally figured out it was a Yachtmaster. Looks rather expensive....
