Field watch recommendations

All,

I am getting the bug for a field watch. I am concerned that the obvious choices like Hamilton won’t be very well finished.

I am thinking maybe a Weiss, but can’t see one in the metal. Here is the model I am considering.

https://weisswatchcompany.com/produc...ue-field-watch

Does anyone have experience with Weiss, or suggestions on other nicely finished field watches?

Thanks!!

Doesn’t Longines do a nice field watch or two?

I gave up on field watch. True field watch should be cheap and quartz IMHO.

Cheap, yes. Quartz, not so much. Always liked the Timex Mk wind up field watch but at $200… I’m now contemplating the Bulova A11.

The Longines Heritage Military (L28264532) is particularly nice!

Seiko makes so many that fit into the field watch sort of ideal I don’t think you can go wrong with them.

Serious question: What is a field watch? Are you some kind of farmer who work on the corn field or something? If so then I suggest some VERY cheap digital watch.

I own several Hamiltons - all very well finished. I'm not sure where you got that idea from.

I will give Hamilton a second look. Unfortunately I don’t have a dealer in town to see them in person.

I will also check out Longines. Thanks!

I have this, I don't purposely mistreat it, but I also don't baby it... And not a scratch on it. The case has a bead-blasted finish so that might be the reason.

This is a great simple hand-wind watch that is very easy to read at a quick glance and does not get in the way on the wrist at 38mm diameter and 10mm thick.

It looks good on a variety of straps, including the OEM green NATO-style strap. My favorite is a gray NATO.

I don't know that there's a better field watch than Hamilton. At least, when I consider the attributes that I'm looking for in a field watch...which, cost is #1 just ahead of legibility.

If you want it to be in expensive, Timex. :)

Get the new Hamilton in titanium, it’s a total beauty.

This is my first post after years of reading, but I think a really great alternative (and for sure off the beaten path) is a company called S.U.F. They are an independent brand located in Helsinki. They have a field watch called the 180. They do limited runs of different dial and date variations and they only have one available now. For sure you should check it out.

I tried to post a link to the site, but as this is my first post, I cant.

My issue is that the smallest mechanical they make today is 38mm, with long lugs. A bit bigger than I like for this type of watch. I'm intrigued by some of the Bulova WWII-style field watches. Doubt they are Hamilton-level quality, but can also be had for under $250.

Yes, I do wish the lugs were a bit shorter on the Hamilton. I'm generally not a fan of long lugs... So as such, the watch sort of looks small (ish), but wears larger than it looks. The 38mm Hamilton has the same lug to lug as my Speedmaster.

Even worse, I was checking out the Longines Heritage Tuxedo... what a beauty....but... 50mm lug to lug on a 38mmm case... why?!

Anyone see the Lang 1943 field watch write up recently? Sort of interesting.

I recently purchased a Longines Spirit, Green dial. I think it makes a excellent field watch. Mine came with a bracelet and strap. Prestige edition. I now have it on a green canvas strap and it is extremely light and comfortable.

Indices are applied, minute hand reaches the outer chapters for detailed reading as does the red tipped second hand.

I think it's a excellent field type watch and one heck of a value.

The watch is 40mm, fully lumed, 100m water resistance with a very nice and easy screw down crown. The movement is the L888.4 Chronometer grade with Si hair spring. It's accurate, Anti-magnetic and has a double domed sapphire crystal with anti reflective coatings. 5 year warranty as well.

Please excuse the smudges, finger prints and stains as I have been wearing this one nonstop for a couple weeks and did not clean it for these photos.

I’m a fan, especially now that it comes in 37, too

Oh, almost forgot a recent favorite (though cannot personally vouch for the quality/finish):

The air force isn't exactly out in the field... But the "best bang for buck" watch with a column wheel chrono is the seagull 1963... All in at under 250 bux.
