Examples of 80s-era Datejust on leather strap?
Hello everyone, I'm excited to post here as I recently inherited my grandfather's Rolex, a 1984ish two-tone Datejust with a jubilee bracelet. I would post pictures, but it's already getting serviced as it was his daily wearer for the last 30 or so years and was quite rough.
My uncle, who is our family's knowledgeable watch fanatic (and actual original purchaser of the watch), recommended that I put the watch on a new leather strap with a deployant clasp. The bracelet looks very loose and worn. My wife and our jeweler were aghast that I would think to separate the watch and the bracelet. Does anyone have any good examples of that era on a strap? I'd love to see/discuss the pros and cons of each option. |

Not much to it, pick a strap you like and put it on there.
Each of these watches has a metal bracelet to use when I choose. |

If the bracelet is loose, a leather strap would surely be good to swap. You can also have the bracelet tightened, if you wish. Make sure it is done by someone qualified to do so. Michael Young out of Hong Kong is someone the forum recommends.
Not 80s, but mid 70s. The look of the datejust has not changed much between decades. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This is perfect info--the examples on Michael Young's website of "stretched" bracelets are exactly what my grandfather's looks like.
Thank you all! Hopefully I have some good photos to share in a couple of months. |

1955, unfortunately original croco bracelet was replaced some 25 years ago.

Here's my stainless steel 16030 and two-tone 16013 on leather until I get the original bracelets tightened. These are rotated with my GMT-Master II during the week.

As well as getting the bracelet tightened, I'd contact Rolex and enquire about getting a genuine croc strap with the Rolex buckle (and hang the expense). Your grandfather's heritage is priceless.

Not an 80s but a 1970 1601. But you get the idea - I love it on a strap
