I purchased my Sub for retail plus tax from my AD, bought my DJ 41 TT from a grey for 1,500 below retail, no tax of course. The Datejust was a 2019 model and the grey got the AD to put my name on the Warranty Card, it was a sweet deal!

Can I ask a "dumb foreigner" question. Why do people keep saying they don't pay tax on Grey (Gray!) purchases? Do you not have to pay tax on all purchases in the US?

If you purchase something from a store or business not in your state, the business has no obligation to charge you sales tax. You are supposed to tally purchases of this nature and report it on your own taxes at the end of the year, so you pay a tax in your own state, but there is no way for anyone to find out if you don’t and it’s common practice to just not do it.

+1

...and that 9-10% plus any grey discount really adds up!

I have purchased a new YG Daytona from a gray at a good rate, no complaints. Bought a BLRO at another gray, paid a premium with no regret. Both deals were done via texting. No phone, simple and easy. Trusted sellers are like no other. My experience is that they gladly take your watches in on trade (offer very fair as well) and can source you most watches at a certain premium. AD relationships are great to have but you to invest time & money...theres a return but is it worth it? In the end, to each his/her own!

Awesome thread! It's a question people wonder as they rationalize the decision!

Paid £300 over MSRP at a grey a few weeks before Basel 2019.. I genuinely wanted it and was far too excited for an AD wait, I now know I likely would never have got it at the AD regardless.

I was on a waiting list for over a year on a Sub LVc. Last August, seeing the prices starting to rise, I bought used from a grey and was happy with the watch, but preferred owning new.

In February this year, I got an AD call, that they had a LVc, I bought it and sold the used watch back to the grey I bought it from at a small profit.

Would I buy from a grey again, probably, maybe.

Gladly went grey, didn't hurt and have been enjoying my BLRO for months instead of waiting on a list. Bought my BLNR from AD, overall, market value is not much lower than what I paid. Now I can patiently wait for SkyDweller to show up.

There are two states in the US which I'm aware of which charge no sales tax. Of course these are in Oregon and New Hampshire. I lived in Oregon for about 6 years and live a half hour drive from New Hampshire now. Buying tax free on things other than those which must be registered (cars and boats for instance) is a standard for me and many others along the border to NH. My AD has a store in NH; that's how I got the Platona tax free. For that matter my other grey purchase was also from NH so both of my AD purchases have been tax free!!!

I will buy grey if I am confident (as far as one ever can be) that the market price is only going to rise. If a grey offered me a Pepsi at MRSP plus £2,000, would I buy it? Yes, in a heart-beat.

Would I buy the CHNR (a watch I want, actually) from a grey at MRSP plus £2,000? No, because whilst the watch is selling at a premium at the moment, there is still a lack of desire generally for TT watches and I think there is a good chance that the market value will fall back to MRSP.

For me, the question really is not about AD/MRSP or grey - it is about economics. I once paid a premium for a very rare car from a "grey" and it was a decision that made me a lot of money. Every single car I have bought through the official dealers has lost me a lot of money.

Exact same story, enjoying the blro so much and still waiting for the Daytona call

Sorry I missed this earlier ... it’s a 690. It was a boutique only release and sold out immediately. I pretty much had no choice but to buy through the gray market. Worth it to me tho

Paid grey for Daytona a year ago.

1) If I hadn’t I would still be waiting now as my AD lost Rolex status
2) My name IS on the warranty card
3) It’s gone up by 3-4 grand since I bought it

The only reason why i would buy grey is because it was cheaper than at a AD... Not when you have to pay a premium

I had one offered by an AD; even when they were new they were only selling for a couple of thousand above list. It just seems like to precarious a balance and that the prices will take a tumble due to the TT styling. It better be a watch you really, really want if you buy it!!!

I have bought nine references from the AD at RRP.

Truth be told I can't afford to pay over retail. If I could, I would...

Did your AD put you on a wait list for the CHNR? The TT one turns up now and then at my AD. I saw one early last year and they tell me they had another in the window in the summer for a few days.

After my current order arrives, a TT CHNR will be my next and probably last Rolex. I haven't yet asked my AD if they are wait list or special order. I try to take it one watch at a time. Difficult, but it can be done!

i think the Americans are a lot more fortunate than Asians. I guess the market in the states is much more bigger than asia with hundreds if not thousands of ADs. Those people who are lucky to receive calls from the Ads are generally Americans. The wait may a few month or one or two years but it will come. Here in Singapore I can use my fingers to count the number of Ads... probably only 5? The waiting list is very long. Most singaporeans are rich doesnt help either. So all my sports models are from the greys.

People also say that Australia is difficult as well. Truth be told - yes we have more ADs but majority of us still cannot get any watches haha
