I was made aware that 007 wore a Sub and liked the brand from there on in.
It was over 20 years later that I bought my first Bi Metal Datejust, possibly due to my close circle of friends all had either DJ’s in bi metal (TT if you like) and one had a gold Daydate with the president bracelet.
Peer pressure, yeh, that’s it!

I owned a Omega Bond Seamaster in Blue and felt compelled to own a Rolex as well. Now I don't own the Omega nor a Sub. Happy with what I ended up with however which, I'm glad to say, have nothing to do with the fictional Bond character.

The first I bought I actually did because when I weighed it up against a Breitling and an Omega I wanted, both at half the price and were brands I favoured then as I was anti-Rolex at the time, the quality and feel of the Rolex won me over and I happily doubled my budget.

I grew up in a blue collar family but my dad was a watch guy. He had a cool Seiko Yachtsman, then an Omega Mark IV, he even had a Tudor Sub 9411/0 (that he wouldn't wear) but he always wanted a Rolex Sub.

He died before I could afford to buy him one.

When I finished paying off all of my student loan debt (which was a ton) and my family was debt free, I took $10K into my local AD and bought my LVc thinking about my dad. Since then I have added others, but the LVc is special because of that connection to my pop.

I wanted a watch to pass onto my son who may someday have a son of his own to pass it onto.

Wanting this, I wanted a watch and brand that was timeless through decades, that would mean something to someone fifty years from now.

Given my tastes and budget, a Submariner fit the bill like nothing else.

I had been a fan of watches since high school (with a Swatch and multiple straps). I bought one of the early plastic Tags when I got into college and when I started my career and doing well, I decided to buy a decent watch when I got my first real bonus. I had always wanted a Rolex but was a little hesitant to spend so much on a watch. I ended up buying a Tag Heuer Chronograph for around $1,200. About 1 year later, I got another bigger bonus and my wife was about to have our first child, so I decided to buy her a Rolex. That was enough justification to get a Rolex for myself (and one in my son’s birth year) so I decided to take the step. I really wanted the Submariner but it was more expensive so ended up “settling” and bought the GMT Master II 16710 for $3,500.

Still loving it to this day (16 years later) and looking forward to the day I can pass it to my son.

For showing off, most people did not notice first because Explorer is really under the radar. So I really had to push my watch in their face in order to show how badass I am. True story.

Always wanted one but held off to focus on other things (paying off student loans etc). Once all other tasks accomplished, my wife bought me a sub when she found out she was pregnant with our first.

Love the look of the GMT Master BLRO. Ever since 1984 when Tom Selleck wore one on Magnum PI I wanted one. I love the history of that model, released in 1954 and still selling today.

I bought my first Rolex as a gift to my wife for finishing her masters degree. She bought her first Rolex as a anniversary gift to me. Traded in a couple other pieces for another. So in all honesty, I never “bought” one for myself. Sold both my Rolexs to casualize my collection.

Got to 40 and started looking in AD's windows and started to feel the urge to purchase a Rollie. Always wanted one as a kid after getting hooked on Swiss watches through the Swatch brand.

I have been intermittently into watches for the most of my adult life, but my top end wasn’t much...a $1k Raymond Weil.

Late last year, my sons (13 and 11) were poking around in my things and took noticed of a couple of 20 year old Tags in my box, one of which is the gold one on the faux jubilee worn by Leonardo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street. Unexpectedly, they both asked if they could have them to wear when they dress up. How could I say no? I took them to get sized that day, leaving a small opening in my watch box.

Suffice it to say, that moment reignited my love for watches and out of the blue, I wound up purchasing two Rolexes within 3 months of each other...not the hard to find stuff, mind you. Just watches that spoke to me (AK, White Milly) and now those are earmarked for my guys as well.

I am on the hunt for more and, to reward myself to celebrate my stage of life, will turn my attention to PM in the near future. I hope to level off at 4-5 total watches and I plan to be patient and let the suckers and speculators clear out a bit before making a substantial investment.

Thanks to my sons and to the enablers on this forum for helping stir the passion!

I have been interested in watches since I was a child. Started with a SS Fossil watch in middle school haha. I always said since I was a kid, I want to wear a suite to work, and wear a nice watch. Gradually improved my collection to a couple Tag's, and then Breitlings (all from the same AD), and then ultimately to my BLNR which I purchased at the same AD who pulled it out of the safe for me in June of 2018. in 2013, I knew it was the watch I had to have! At 33 it was a sense of accomplishment that I had worked towards. With two young kids, I am looking forward to my next Rolex so I can pass one down to each of them. And then hopefully add some more for me. But something about the first Rolex purchased from an AD was special!

I was 26, just finished training and had my first adult paycheck.

I bought an explorer 2 as something to wear every day that looks gorgeous, while being super durable and something I can pass on.

Saw my very first Rolex in 1987, my uncle was wearing a SS DJ at a family gathering, instantly fell in love with the design and started looking for literature on the brand at the local library and newsstand (yeah, no internet search back then in Italy).

Just really, really like my OP. Glad I got it before the world of watches went crazy. Think the focus on value would have kept me from getting my first Rolex now.

Got mine few weeks ago. Always wanted one but with family and kids, it just had to wait. Have a Burberry chrono which i still love but hasn't gotten any wrist time lately. With 2 boys, need one more to pass down to them. Luckily my wife after seeing my black dial daytona and trying it on. She is ok with the size and she decided to get the white dial daytona. But that have to wait cuz my AD said she can get me one next year.

Curiosity led me to step into a Rolex ad store to just take a look at their watches in their display case. As I was browsing a sales guy approached me and asked if anything picked my interest. I said nothing really. I then remember reading an article about daytonas and asked if they had one. The sales guy excused himself, went to the back, after 10 minutes came back and said “let’s try this one on.” When I saw it in the flesh and put it around my wrist it was love at first sight. It was a 116520 and from that day on the Rolex bug has bit me.
