All this talk about what is vintage or not...
So all this talk about what is vintage or not... Some saying 30 plus years and some say only plexi/non gold surrounds...
So my watch is 35 years old and is an all original transitional early gloss dial with white gold surrounds from 1984 reference 16800... Still not vintage? So when does it become vintage? Is it just a classic forever since it has white gold surrounds and shappire glass? Insert has faded to matte and in some light it's bluish... The tritium has turned creamy from white... Silver brushed datewheel has open 6 and 9's.. The steel is 316L steel... Still not vintage enough? |

I do think the definition should be revised from just 4 digits to include more references at this point. Very lovely watch BTW! Here's more of the same talk on another active thread: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=691571

35 years old is definitely vintage for me regardless of other factors.

My 28 year old 1991 Sub 16610 didnt make the cut either. I agree with the four digit option, it makes things a lot simpler that way. I have a 1680, so I win either way.

What difference does it make what it's called? Again, as I mentioned in one of these threads a while back, nothing magical or mystical happens because you or anyone calls a watch vintage.
Let's move on please. Why keep beating the dead horse?

Glosstritium, you have a lovely watch. Period. Who cares what categoric time-frame label is attached to it. The value of it isn't going to change. Your appreciation of it (I hope) isn't going to change. If you want to apply the label "vintage" to it, go ahead. No one has any authority to stop you. Some may disagree. But, as Springer pointed out, What difference does it make? The term "vintage" means different things to different people! |

to each his own defintion, for me vintage is a tool watch, pre-owned, and pre-loved, that has history and nice scuffs, but still runs like day 1. It can be a beat up GMT or an old speedmaster that was gifted as a graduation present.
All in all, to me it's a watch with history that was well worn and appreciated and still have lots of love left in it |

Ask the watch politely its position on people being on its lawn. If it gets agitated, its vintage.

Exactly, call a five digit what you want age wise, it would still be missing the desirable attributes of the iconic four digit references.
Saphire crystals, white gold dial markers, thicker cases are a different game. |

Tip of the Day: Life is short... so make sure you spend as much time as possible on the internet arguing with strangers about the meaning of vintage in relation to a bunch of old watches most people niether care for or have even heard of...
