5712r to 5170p, would you?

Only have one pp, the 5712r. Had it 3 years from new. Still looks nearly new and i really like it.

I see the price gap to a 5170p has narrowed to the point of affordability. This the only other ref that i would consider.

Would you swap? Yes or no and why?

To make a truly impartial decision, you need to strip away the hype and zeitgeist currently surrounding the Nautilus and sports-watches in general.
And when you do that, you get to the real, RAW, consideration of 5712R vs 5170P. A rose gold, auto, sports watch with a fairly simple movement VS a platinum cased, quite beautifully-dialed, manual wind chrono, where the finish and quality is just breathtaking and a design which is the modern epitome of the brand.
And when you do that you realise that the 5170p is on another planet.

No doubt the Nautilus-obsessives who don't know anything about Patek outside their sports watches will be on shortly to say the opposite - 5170p will certainly get fewer looks in a Miami club.

In a few years, when the premium and hype evaporates, they'll have moved on back to AP and Rolex.
So ask yourself first, "do you believe the hype?"

@mb, totally agree with you.

I bought my watch long before the hype started. I made a choice based on my sole taste.

In this instance, i have the ability to capitalise on the recent hype to upgrade to something arguably more special for much less money than would have been the case 4-5 years ago.

To be clear, i really really like my 5712r irrespective of any recent hype. At the risk of starting a controversial topic, i still feel that it is the nicest 5712. To my eyes at least.

i do like the nautilus' for what they are, even the ones on leather. still the 5170P is patek at its best and what patek is all about.
when the nautilus hype is passed, the classical top pateks might reemerge out of the shadow.
actually, even the die-hard nautilus fan that i am is getting bored by them....i am going to keep two or three and that is it, i am already moving on.

Mate - as I said, take the hype out of it, and the Nautilus just does not compare. The 5170p is BEAUTIFUL.

If you do it and take the profit, the 5170p will be a far more private pleasure (for now). Although the 5712 is the cheaper watch (at retail for sure), it's far better for status-signalling and that matters to some (which is fine - to each, their own). The 5170p is for YOU (and the cognoscenti).

The 5170P is an extraordinary watch. I would trade your watch for it at any time. As some suggested anyway. the Nautilus seems like it belongs on the bracelet which may make the decision even easier or more clear. I think the first in-house chrono will stand the test of time as a hallmark watch for PP. The finale P is the best of the reference.

I would do it. Owned the 5170p before. Not a fan of the patented leather strap however. I recommend swapping out to a matte finish.

I like the 5712r but would be hard not to if you can leverage so.

I think what's not being asked here is what do you intend to use your one and only Patek for?

I like both the 5712R and the 5170P. Very much. I'm also a huge fan of Platinum and would take it over any other material almost any day.

But, they're both different watches in my opinion. In some cases, if I could only choose one, I'd choose the 5712R, and in others, the 5170P.

One is automatic, one is manual wind. One has date, one does not. One looks sportier, one is not.
