Just got a pre owned rolex

So I just bought off eBay a Rolex Air King 1002. Cost me 600, but the catch was it came with a Tudor Prince Movement. I figured it was a good price and I could always get a Rolex movement later for it. In addition I want to replace the leather band with a oyster bracelet. I felt this could be a project for me that I wouldn't have to pay for all at once. I love the dial on this watch. Love your opinions. IMG_6094.jpg

Good news....bad news

The good news is it's most likely a Tudor with a fake dial so you won't have to chase down a Rolex movement. The bad news it's most likely a Tudor with a fake dial.

Try to get a pic of the case back and there will be some numbers between the lugs at 6:00 and 12:00. Post those numbers and we can pin down what it is.

The serial number on watch starts with 282 and is 7 numbers total. From my research that would mean the watch was made in 1970, and be a legitimate rolex case.

So under the 6 it says Stainless Steel with serial number underneath

Under 12 (or side) it says Registered Design and underneath 1002.

Pictures were not coming out clear....

Best of luck with it, I wouldn't put a whole lot of money in it. Case has some corrosion, been polished a time or two. Just wear it and enjoy it. :)

I've. Priced that. I like the look of it now and won't repolish. Thinking of getting a ore owned or aftermarket steel band and leaving movement alone.

Bracelet would be good, that's 19mm I believe. You could get AM now and maybe pick up a genuine one when the right deal comes along.

I don't want to minimize the fact that you like this watch, because that's the important thing. Still, I think it's always advisable to acquire fully original, or at minimum, period-correct timepieces. For the amount of money that you mentioned sinking into this project watch, you could pick up an honest, vintage Omega Constellation or Seamaster, Universal Geneve Polerouter, Gallet Chronograph, Lemania Chronograph, and so on, and so on.

I agree

I understand what you are saying. And if I didn't ha e two kids running around I would have spent 3-4K on an original Pre Owned Rolex and be happy with it. But despite the fact my wife would kill me, it just didn't make sense at this time. So I got a watch that looks nice, and has the Rolex name on it. Except for you wonderful people no one else knows what's inside it or not. I got compliments already and for my purposes I am happy with it. I know a lot of people look at Rolex as an investment. For me it's a nice looking watch that fits who I am right now. So at some point I will get the watch I want, or may he live to be 100, at some point I'll get my Dads date just. But till then. I'm happy.

agree 100% with your viewpoint. yes in a perfect world we all could afford expensive watches but the bottom line is enjoyment. you, like most of the world's population have family obligations and cannot fork out excessive cash for a hobby. you are on the right track and your watch is perfectly enjoyable here in the real world.

best wishes and enjoy
