Memory errors when trying to open very large threads...

Has anyone else seen this?

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 51713 bytes) in /home/trfcom/public_html/showthread.php on line 1275

I use a Mac. It happens with any browser any time I try to open a thread that has a few thousand replies.

Me thinks the admin(s) need to allocate more memory for php.

Moved into the appropriate sub-forum.

Personally, I've never come across your issue, and just accessed a few random large threads that you deem to be problematic. Using my iPad mini, and my iPhone 6s, no problems at all...?!

'Me thinks' the problem is your end.
Unless of course we get hundreds posting to this thread, all with the same troubles..

I know from past discussions with other members that most people never encouter this error. I see it when using different Mac computers on different networks (again any browser), but it seems to be limited to Macs. I have not seen it when using Windows based machines.

Perhaps, but it seems odd this would be something on my end when the error occurs using separate accounts installed on different individual computers, (albeit Macs) located on different networks. That's what leads me to think perhaps I might not be the only one who sees it, but I could be wrong.

FWIW, I discovered the problem only occurs when I'm logged in. When logged out, I can open these very large threads. I can't see uploaded images of course, but at least I can view the messages.

A search on google with error message and vBulletin as keywords brought up a lot of results - most of which pointing to suggestion on adjusting memory limits in the php configs on the server side.

I can't think of what might be causing it on my end, but I'll keep digging around. Maybe try changing my thread view options in the forum settings - go back to default. If that doesn't work, I'll try disabling the plugins on my browser, resetting Safari, etc.

Bingo. The the first thing I tried fixed it; changing the thread display mode option back from hybrid to the default linear mode and the problem vanished.

Forum admins might want to test this using a Mac, because this is a real problem that potential users besides me may encounter. The forum will break on these large threads if users have customized their view mode with the hybrid option.

Tweaking the memory limits in the forum/php config might fix it, but in the meantime hopefully this info might be able to help other folks.
