New guy question: Gorgeous, but which model is it?

Greetings List,

I was browsing through threads trying to decide which DJII dial color I like.

In the "Best color dial for a Datejust" thread (post #37) I saw this model that just blew me away. I have looked everywhere and cannot find anything about it.

Question: What model is this and how do I find one?

if all original, it looks like a 6605...

With that bezel and the raised logo on the dial, it could also be a 6305 or a 6105, but chances are that taxico nailed it, 6605. Be aware that that bezel is very polished.

I don't know if that is true. If you have your heart set on a 6605, they do come up for sale with some regularity: it's not considered super-collectible. A lot of the examples have dials that are re-painted, which means the price should be lower. There is no harm in having a re-painted dial painted once again, which means you could choose whatever configuration coats your goat.

I had my gold 6605 dial painted the way I wanted, it had been repainted poorly before.

Everything looks very polished. Like a half used bar of soap.

I am sure you could find one at a good price. They are very affordable.

Not sure of the cost to change the color of the date wheel, but I would not think it to be expensive at all.

After looking around it seems the Turn-O-Graph model is the next closest version to this one.

I happen to like the my original choice as I prefer the dauphine-style hands reminiscent of the GO senator panorama date (which I also like). The date wheel color is not that important.

The only problem is that I really don't care for fluted bezels and stick style hands. Hmm.

I thank CaveDweller for the compliment, but your avatar seems much nicer: less polished or unpolished case, original dial. No, I bought mine to wear, and the price was right, and the repainted dial was noticeably chipped around the edges, so I had it painted. I love vintage, I've spent far too much time and money in my life on vintage watches, but I have no illusions that most folks probably won't be wearing mechanical wristwatches thirty years from now. So everyday examples, not super-original or super-clean or super-rare, won't be worth much. So why not restore to the condition that makes them a pleasure to wear? Can't see the harm. Then again, there are some real patina-fetishists out there, and as long as I have ugly watches to sell, I won't restore everything I touch.

Should be obtainable, the link he sent isn't even close to the same watch. his is a 1956 vs 1959 for example. The 1959 has a redone dial which doesn't mean the 56 was redone.

To the OP – it’s rare to see an untouched perfect dial on a 6605 these days, the one in my avatar has been completely (the whole watch) “re-furbished” to get it in mint condition, and I inevitably paid a premium for that.

The other thing are the movements, with very limited parts supply. To get a “mint” 6605 in perfect working order such as the one you posted could cost you more than you’d think. There will always be exceptions of course, but most dealers price by condition.

A viable alternative could be the more recent “Turno-graph” - a quick google search will show you what I mean …..
