Hi guys,

New to the forum and I just wanted some opinions on a watch I'm about to purchase.
I've been a fan of the DateJust for years and now the time has come to buy one :)

I know a little bit about the market, but I am not a watch connoisseur by any means.
I have placed a refundable deposit on the watch but I thought it would be best to find out your opinions on the watch before I buy it.

It comes with the box but without papers (I'm assuming you don't need the papers when taking it to a RSC?)

I really wanted some people who have experience with buying watches to give me their honest opinion on the watch, it has clearly been polished for resale but I have no clue if it's been over polished so was hoping you guys could shed some light.
Unfortunately I can't go and see the watch in person as it's too far away for me to travel with my busy schedule over the next few weeks.

The link doesn't seem to take me to the actual page for whatever reason. I've had a bunch of rolexes omega etc.. over the years. Some new some preowned. You have to be very careful with preowned rolex. I've walked into a high end jewelry store and looked at a preowned explorer and asked to see the movement. The salesman said we just got this in. We opened the watch and there was an ETA movement in there!!! That's from a high end jewelry store in an affluent suburb. Probably the first and last time that will ever happen there but it happened. Shame on them for not opening it before they bought it but the rest of it was legit. The guy who sold it to them might not have even known. Long story short if you get it make sure you take it to a watchmaker to open it and check the whole thing out! There are a ton of trusted sellers that really know what they are doing and know their watches here on the classifieds and also bobs, DavidSW, etc... that have huge reputations to uphold

See, it's stories like this that make me glad I bought my watch new from an authorized Rolex dealer. ETA movements are decent, I have a variation of an ETA movement in my TAG-Heuer, it is a decent movement but it's not a Rolex movement. There is that value in buying new.

They were't able to give me any information as to when it was last serviced though, they claim all watches are serviced before being sold however I may take it to a RSC just to be on the safe side.

A decent tech will open the watch and see if there is any debris in and on the movement; they'll be able to tell how recently the last servicing was. I wouldn't be surprised if many place consider a polish as servicing.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll defo get it checked by an independent specialist first. I'm probably just being pedantic about it, but better to be safe I suppose

Get your money back. I haven't tried DAVIDSW read all the posts seems like he's an honest guy. I've always purchased from AD although I only save 10% it's a peace of mind.

Do your research. I have not purchased from any grey dealer in the past, but I have noticed that currently some are charging outrageous prices, fay beyond retail, for newer models, and not so fair pricing on used. Up to you if you still want to support a grey that does that. There are many greys out there. Research will hopefully it will find what you want at a fair price.

Something else: With some collectors, or those serious about watches, they absolutely will not purchase a watch without a box and papers. Papers are more important. Consider that in your pricing, as that drags the price down, and also consider that, as you may some day decide to resell the watch, and your target audience may be limited without the papers.

I usually purchase new but when going pre owned have used DavidSW. No doubt about what you are getting, only 100% genuine. He is helpful and easy to deal with. Get your money back and go with him.

Okay just got the watch and I am absolutely in love with it. However I was giving it a polish just before bed and I am horrified. The bezel/glass/cyclopse rotate. I have no idea how this is even possible. I will be taking the watch to a Rolex Accredited repair centre first thing on Monday and will then be in contact with the company I purchased it from. I am stunned, unless this is a simple fix I am not happy at all. I get the feeling a third party sapphire crystal has been used to replace the original as I cannot find the laser etched crown, even using the torch/light method. Ugh, I really hope this will be an easy fix as I love the watch and waited ages to get one :(

It's a 2008 36mm Rolex Datejust ref. 116233. It's not the turn-o-graph.

What you should have done would have been to buy the seller first before buying the watch...Is it refundable if it doesn't work fine?

I think I have made myself sound a bit stupid in this thread haha. I did check out the seller and they appear to a reputable company in the UK. I checked their financial accounts using companies house and they are a financially stable business. I trust that once it is checked out by the specialist and I contact them they will sort the watch out. The trouble is that having a two tone oyster bracelet on a DateJust 36 is relatively uncommon, as the jubilee seems to be more desirable in two tone. I got a good deal on the watch and decided to pull the trigger, I couldn't go and see the watch as it was all the way in Liverpool which is a 4/5 hour drive for me. Hence I bought it online. I will get it checked out tomorrow and keep the thread updated
