I'm so disappointed...went to AD today....
I was so excited about the release of the explorer ii 42mm. I had all but eliminated a breitling and panerai that I had been considering and basically new I was going to get the new explorer. It would be my first rolex. However, I saw and tried on the old version of the explorer today and it did absolutely nothing for me. It just seemed so "ordinary" and didn't speak to me at all. From the pictures I have seen on here and other places, the models are very similar in terms of design except for the respective sizes and other relatively minor differences.
Does this mean I probably will not like the explorer ii when it is released?? Kinda heart-broken..... |

One of the virtues of ROLEX is that they are ordinary. That is what makes them special!

Well the Upgraded Exp II is 42mm so will wear bigger... The black with the orange hand is also pretty cool as it's in line with the super cool 1655....

I'm really hoping the size and the orange hand will make a difference.... I tried on the Milgauss GV and liked it a lot. Maybe that will be my second choice if I'm not crazy about the explorer ii.

Rolex are timeless classics and not trendy nor ordinary. In that respect they very unique in watch making history. But like everything they are not for everyone.

Rolex skillfully maintains the presence that they desire.
I wouldn't call call Rolex ordinary. Quite the contrary, Rolex is extraordinary in myriad ways. Rolex may not be as exclusive as some brands, but this is as Rolex desires it to be.

Wait until you see how massive the hands are on the new Explorer. They are massive!!! Then make your decision.
IMO this is not a traditional "timeless" Rolex. It is beyond the Sub Maxi Case. You either love it or hate it. I am among the latter.

For the few who actually have purchased or physically seen this watch already is it substantially similar to the previous model?? If not, can you elaborate on the differences?

Thank you for the recommendation. I think you get what I'm saying....not that others don't but the term ordinary does not mean anything negative and I didn't mean it that way.

Compare to the exp2 the exp42 is a different beast, It is bigger, with fatter hands and the orange GMT hands makes a good contrast against the black or white dial. Im sure you'll like it. But i wait till the hype for exp42 is over and for the price to normalize before getting one.

Do you want one so that you have "a" Rolex or because you want THAT Rolex? The answer to that question is your answer, IMO.

Sounds like you aren't too sure about the Explorer at all. I think you should wait, try on the new one, and also other models/brands as well.
I am not really sure what you are looking for. You mentioned you were looking at a Breitling and a Panerai also. To me a Rolex, Breitling, and Panerai are totally different animals...In the end you need to find a watch that is extraordinary to you. |

I agree there are enough differences between the 40mm and the 42mm that I would reserve judgment for after trying one on. I as well am not an Explorer fan but am anticipating trying one on, I love the 42mm size idea

OK, so get this. Rolex models are basically repeats of what they've been doing forever. But, they've been doing it great forever. They're repeating ad infinitum industry standards that they invented -- from the waterproof case to the bezel swivel. Even with bling, they're still all pretty solid tool watches, despite those who hate scratches.
Panerai (I own one, I succumbed) and Breitling have for a while, and to some amount, been just fancy cases on (pretty solid) industry standard watches. Not that ETA watches aren't good, they're just... standard. What you want to make sure you get is an in-house movement, IMO. I don't know if the other watches you're looking at have that, but I would recommend you seek that. Aside from this forum, I would suggest you also hop over to askmen.com and check their WatchSnob articles to get an idea of what's what. Expy II's of either the old or the new variety are excellent choices, btw. |

Having owned the old one too, the new one is much more exciting!
I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The old one is perhaps in a sort of anti-climax state at the moment since we have all been drooling at the pics of the new one.
