Thanks. Yes, we're never really satisfied for sure. I tried to build this collection around iconic watches that I would never want to sell simply because I got tired of them. I would even find it hard to part with for an obvious upgrade. Unfortunately, that only leaves adding pieces....

2 is not a collection, 3 is perfection. Currently working on my third piece.

For me after 4 years of buying and selling, two is my ideal number. If I don't wear it, it goes.

1) VC Patrimony - simple PM two hand dress watch with a brown strap that I usually rotate for work during the week (matching with brown shoes). I swap to the black strap and this is the watch I wear with a tux.

2) PP 5146G Annual Calendar - grey strap so is my workday rotation with black shoes.

3) AP 15202 Jumbo - workday rotation, usually to match with blue suit, shirt, etc. As it is on a bracelet, this gets more wrist time during the summer.

4) Rolex 16710 GMT Master II - weekend rotation or Casual Fridays - I consider this my beater

5) 1968 Omega Speedmaster Transitional - weekend rotation with the Rolex

I feel this is a fairly well-balanced collection as I have a dress watch, complication, GMT, and chronograph. What I would like to add is a rectangular watch so have my eye on the PP Gondolo, a diver so would like to add a birth year (1970) Submariner to get another vintage watch and possibly an Aquanaut (perhaps a 5164 Travel Time to be my business travel watch).

That would put me at 8 and would likely lead to a divorce...

I have thought about trading in several pieces to upgrade, my grail would be the PP 5270 but think I would miss rotating as much as I do. I rarely wear the same day two days in a row, and have never worn it for a third day.
Thats an incredibly diverse collection, good job

The question is ideal....you really only need a couple. I chose 3.

2 daily drivers
1 special

6-7 maybe. I dont think its necessary to wear each watch or to stress if some of them just sit in watch box. There is a reason why each of them is bought. Maybe even more.

Four is my objective. White, Black, Blue and Green dials. Mix of metals, bracelets and straps. Now if I just get my wife on board.

I agree we -- this group -- might have the propensity to overthink things.

From my point of view, getting the wife on board is the perpetual movement.

I have Exp1 which is a keeper, it is my every day stainless steel watch.

Besides that I am planning a second position in my collection, but this will be to serve my horological hunger and interest. So in that position watches will be flipped. Bluesy and Reverso will for sure pass by. No need to own dozens of watches for me.

Oh and I have a G-Shock, so for me: I have two watches now but three watches, where one can be flipped is way to go!

5 works well for me now but I plan to consolidate down to 3 by trading up 2-3 watches to a PP 5711/5712.

1-2 Rolex (dress & sport), 1 AP, 1 PP & 1 ALS. That makes it 4-5.

3 is the perfect number for a rotation....otherwise it's too long without wrist time. An additional 4th floater that you like to wear every now and then would be fine too. I used to think more was better, but not anymore.

Something like:

Rolex Sub
Patek Sport
Patek Dress
& something funky from AP

Why do you feel the need to "thin" out the collection?
They're bought/paid for so who cares if they sit.
One day maybe you (your fam) will be happy you kept them all!?

As someone who used to be a collector but now strives to lead a minimalistic lifestyle, I think 2 is more than I would ever need.

Currently I have 2 (Apple Watch Series 2 for weekdays / running and Oris Big Crown Pro Pilot for weekends) but if I buy a Submariner Date, I would swap the Oris for it.

I wear a suit maybe twice a year and my work is thankfully a very dress down sort of place, so never need a "dress" watch and love Rolex sport models as they're purposeful and the new range of Apple Watches, as a lover of all technology, is delightful to wear every day.

So 1 mechanical and 1 technological watch is perfect for my life. Also, after reading this article a few years ago, I think it's so inspiring, I hope others take note and trim their collection to only what they really need. There's a purity and enjoyment to owning only what is really necessary.

8 was the highest number, now it's 4. I'm more satisfied with the latter but it will be 5 when I get Sky Dweller

I have 7 now. At the moment i wear mostly DD40, Deepsea and ExpII. 7 fills my watch box, so as one is on my wrist, 8 would be ideal for me. I have 3 winder slots and 4 normal slots. So i can keep those i wear regulary on winders plus wrist and others on display :)

It would be hard for me to have 20 or thirty watches, i am afraid i would not know how to enjoy them. My sweet spot is that i can ’fall in love’ again to some watch of mine, kind of remembering again how good a certain watch was. I think it’s also most economical way to have many special pieces rather than flip.

I'm happy with what I have and won't mind selling what I'm not wearing too much. So any number will work for the moment.

I currently own 3 watches, and am very happy with that 😁

I do window shop and admire other watches, but for now, I think I’m set 👍🏽

I agree. Rolex is the epitome of a "one watch" brand, because they're good for nearly every situation, from a cave to a restaurant, and most of the Rolex "icons" like Newman, Nicklaus, Eisenhower, etc., are known for a single watch or two, not a treasure trove of different colors to match their shoes and shirts or whatever.

My favorite is James Cameron. He is as wealthy as it gets, he has an official Rolex model dedicated to him, yet he still only wears a single 16610 every day.

A couple of months ago, I saw a 25-30'ish year old guy sitting at a coffee shop wearing a beautiful 1675, and he had perfectly primped hair and beard, leather "work" boots with no wear on them, pressed jeans, etc., and it reminded me exactly of that Hodinkee article you linked. In fact, I almost wondered if he worked for Hodinkee. There's just a difference between wanting to look like an adventurer and actually being an adventurer, ya know? With all of these faux-adventurer style and watch blogs that have popped up over the last decade, it's all starting to come off a bit manufactured.

I at least feel comforted that so many of the forum members around here still get their watches dirty, and, you know, use them as intended, whether they have one Rolex or twenty.

I like having more than one. Have 2 now and will probably go to 4 or 5 over the next few years. These timepieces help me enjoy my life. I might ad that the watch I have not had any problems whatsoever with my Rolex watches so far. Running well within COSC.
