This was a very informative thread for a guy like me interested in LV recently. Thank you all for your inputs. Especially Eric for being really patient imo.

Very good discussion stretching back almost a month now. To add value for any new members, or those who are "new-ish" and seeking an LV for their own, let me add some things to keep foremost in mind while looking.

First off, as stated in some posts already, "buy the seller first" - the OP's initial questions revolved around the watch but if you want to buy the first thing is the seller. The first thing that's counter intuitive is a 0 feedback (or a low feedback) seller is not who you buy from sight unseen. And look at a seller's history to see if he has a track record. For example, the seller had 3 sales...





Note that he sold a dial - hmmm...we'll talk more about that in a moment...


Now about those papers - in this case many eyes and those with years of experience noted that those papers look genuine. But to an inexperienced buyer's unaided eye, fake papers often look real. Anyone with a typewriter or printer can buy fake papers and make anything.

And hang tags are also all around, just take an old label to make that look real.

Lastly, make sure you can distinguish a real maxidial from one that's been made in some fakirs shop along with the wider hands. This particular seller has already sold a dial - and who knows if it was real or not? Seems interesting in the research you'd do on a seller.

Summing up, any Rolex can be faked or frankened - sometimes with manufactured papers and aftermarket parts. If you buy from eBay be very certain of the seller's bona fides - get a 30-day full return agreement. Also use the Buyer Protection plan if anything proves to be wrong - and use PayPal because they do lean towards the buyer.

Or...just use the trusted sellers here on TRF who have tons of experience, a track record and are careful on their incoming items they eventually sell.
