She assumed you are a one watch guy?

Could be worse. She could have said 'Unfortunately sir, we will not accept your Invicta for trade'.

Op: Her only mistake was presuming you were taking up her time to actually purchase something. Likely if you had told her you were there "to kill some time trying on whatever was new" I'm sure she would not have offended you with her very accommodating offer. How presumptuous of her to suggest you might want to upgrade to that watch you "lovingly admired".

Most people don't have a watch addiction. Let it go.

She was trying to sell you a watch. I wouldn't take offense at her comments...it's all part of the experience when you go in to an AD to try on a watch. It happens.

I agree with most here, not a big deal to offer a trade in.

I SUPPOSE it could've been said differently, instead of suggesting you might be "tired" of your Rolex, just like, offering that a trade in was an option to offset a lot of the costs of a new one.

I don't see a problem here.

I'm not a flipper, either, but I would think nothing of having a salesperson mention the AD's policy about such matters.

Are there really no salespeople on this forum? Or sales executives? I'll reserve my follow up comment and give someone, anyone, a chance to make the case for why this salesperson blew it on several levels. This goes beyond watches, but the passion that is watch collecting only amplifies the issue.

Maybe she "blew it" by not closing, but what exactly has you so up in arms?

It's a salesperson's duty to offer up all options for a sale. I don't see how letting somebody know that they can trade in their current piece (be it a watch or any other item) to recoup some cash and put it toward a newer model is a faux pas.

The salesperson could have insulted you even more had she offered you a trade in of $2600 for your 114060.

I based this on their cost price of retail less 38% and a a 50% mark up on your watch after factoring in a service.

Now THAT would have been worth a thread.

"You know, if you're tired of your current Rolex you can include it in exchange for the GMT..."

First of all, I adore my Sub-C and will never sell it, ever.

Second, what are the implications behind her comment?

Third, she did not refer to my 114060 as what it is, she just said "your current Rolex".....which I think speaks to the general lack of knowledge that so many watch salespeople have.

Still a pleasant day, but not a behavior I'd include in the training manual for people in the profession.

what is even more ironic is that you weren't even there to seriously make a purchase.
maybe she knew you were wasting her time?

Rolex Sales Person Rulebook

Rule 1 - If a customer wants to try on every new model in the shop DO NOT ask them if they wish to part exchange their current Rolex as they make take offence.

Rule 2 - If you brake Rule 1 in error YOU MUST quickly recover by stating the exact model number of said watch so they do not think they are faced with an incompetent salesperson.

I think you need to lighten up! If you're taking up someone's time who is probably on commission don't be offended if they make you aware of all the options available. IMO they were just doing their job..

From the responses, it's obvious that a lot of us aren't quite sure why you were offended

What are the "implications" that could have upset you?
Sorry, it's too hard to guess, and if you described them, perhaps we'd better understand why you felt slighted

Are you offended it wasn't clear she recognized your 114060?
Maybe she actually did, and correctly assessed that it is worth less than the BLNR (both new and used), so would only be part of what you would have to put up to get the BLNR

Like everyone, no issue, although I would have taken it a step further to see what AD's would offer for my watch to get a sense of the margin they would try to make.

As she was retrieving the watch for you to try on, if you had explained that you were just a tyre kicker "killing time" with no intention of buying the conversation may have gone differently.
