If You Were To Choose: Deep Sea or TT Speedy Broad Arrow

Was originally set on getting either a SS Speedy Broad Arrow or an IWC Pilot Chrono... Eventually, i decided to get another Rolex instead -- a sports Rolex this time. Am still saving up this next "expensive" watch and eyeing the Deep Sea. In Manila, this would cost around Php385,000 or roughly $8,020.

Just passed by the local AD after lunch before i went back to the office and saw the TT Speedy Broad Arrow. This costs Php372,000 or roughly $7,750.

Both, in my opinion, are iconic watches...

very solid build quality on the Deep Sea... i like its understated looks. to the "un-trained eye", it looks like a sub. but to those that do know, it's actually pirced a Speedy Pro higher than the Sub... I am "heavy-boned" (ie. fat hehe) so the size is just right for me too...

the Speedy, on the other hand, is two-tone. a bit flashy since most speedys i see are only in SS (and most are not Broad Arrows). tried it on and fits well too on my wrist.

i am quite unfamiliar with their movements and don't know which is "better". I would neither use any of their features -- i don't dive (well, maybe i do... but only between two feet *wink* if you know what i mean... hehehe ) and would most likely just fiddle with the chrono function of the Speedy...

Should i be comparing the two? Your thoughts?
here are some pics...

Hi Dean!!

Two completely different watches, my friend......making it very difficult to choose one from the other.

This naturally being predominantly a Rolex forum, most of the members are doing to vote for the DSSD; but that would not take away the class and beauty we see in the TT Rose Gold OMEGA.

Of couse, they are both different in functions too; but the most important question is which one do you like? Which one appeals more to you and, most importantly, would your wrist size be able to carry off the rather thick (18 mm height) DSSD? This is the factor that puts most people off the DSSD - it's not the 43 mm width, but the rather higher than usual thickness that can be a deterrent.

Pricewise the difference is virtually negligible, but if given a choice ONLY between those 2 watches, I'd go with the Rolex.

Good luck in your final decision - JJ

thanks JJ, actually i figured most will go for the Deep Sea.. much in the same way, most will go for the Speedy if i posted this query on the Omega Forum...

my heart goes to the Deep Sea too... but wanted to see the other options as well... for me, the Deep Sea is the like the pageant winner pound for pound... but even the runners-up and those in the top 10 are damn gorgeous too!

2 different animals and it really depends if this was going to be your one and only watch.

The Speedmaster is more versatile, because it's thinner and it's dressy and sporty.

The DSSD, is not iconic, well not yet. The SD is an icon. It's a thicker watch.

If I was to purchase one or the other, I would go with the DSSD. I love the shape of the case and the lugs. I wish all Rolex sport watches have the DSSD proportions but smaller.

Two very different watches and almost impossible to compare !!

I am an Omega-fanatic who has just recently "turned" Rolex, so I am at a loss - but based on my newest fancy I would choose the Deepsea !

Also it has a lot to do with, what you are going to use the watch for - I use my watch everyday and next year this "everyday environment" is going to be Helmand, Afghanistan. I have no quarrel exposing the Deepsea to this environment, but I would be a little less confident doing the same to the Speedy !

Most of all though - I would prefer to buy them both !!!

Henry, well, if you think about it, i guess you're right. the Deep Sea is not iconic... yet... at least not the same level as the Sub or the GMT...

Peter, good point! wouldn't feel at ease walking the streets of some parts of Manila wearing a TT Speedy... would be wary to wear the Deep Sea too but I get what you mean the Deep Sea has more of "low-profile" look than the TT (any TT for that matter) and i reckon, it's more robust too and can handle anything thrown its way...

I can't understand why people can't compare two different watches because they're too different. I find it easy.
I have the DeepSea and love it. I think black dial/black bezel goes very well with SS.
I am also a huge fan of Omega but that Speedy is not for me so I say DeepSea.

I'd also pick the Deepsea because it fits my lifestyle better - I play a lot of sports and am quite rough with my watches. With the Omega, I'd end up with lots of scratches on that gorgeous rose gold finish, which would be criminal!

To me, if you're undecided between two equally attractive options, one way to decide is to consider ease, cost and standard of servicing. In Singapore, I believe Rolex has the edge on all three counts over Omega.

Yep ......... and I figure - if I ever find myself in a tight spot in AFG, I could use the Deepsea as a club !!

I would have to say the Omega. I am a big Rolex fan, I love my LV, and the old seadwellers were great, but the deep sea hasn't clicked with me yet. It's the original gas escape valve - ring lock system wording which I think is putting me off it.
That Omega just looks classier in my opinion.

DSSD and don't look back. Rolex over Omega any day, Sorry just my opinion. I have owned Omega and while it's a great watch, it doesn't have that rolex feel. I own the DSSD and were ever I go someone always says what kind of Rolex is that? it looks like the Submariner on steroids and it awesome..

If you are really after something "sporty" I do believe the SDDS is more extreme sporty then the TT . I just don't think that TT expreses sport . Sure that the TT will me more "all round" as you could get away with it on a 3 piece suit , where a SDDS couldn't really . ( I wore my SDDS to work once and it wouldn't fit under the cuffs of my shirt )

TT Speedy for me, no contest.

The DSSD is just way too bulky and un-Rolex for my taste.

I think the decision is pretty easy there.... DS by a mile....
DS is just masculine and sporty.
if you are big boned... then DS is probably going to look better on you.
I tried on the Speedy 2 weeks ago and felt it was a bit too light for my liking.
not sure if that is the case with the tt?

thanks for all the responses guys.. Really appreciate it.. i guess the DSSD fits my lifestyle more...

Was planning to complicate the choices further by throwing in BOTH the TT GMT II AND the TT SUB.. but TT, at this stage wouldn't be practical for me..

Will keep the eye on the prize and rack up those savings to get the DSSD..

I am looking at the resale factor.. you will lose your shirt on the Omega if you ever get "tired" of it, the Rolex DSSD on the other hand at 8,000 should hold up pretty well.

one other factor that you MAY want ot consider...
if you choose to sell..you will recoup more of the purchase price with a DSSD...
Not sure about the Omega...
buy what you like...

rolex

That's a lot for an Omega. I really like the Speedmaster in TT, but that's getting pretty expensive.

For that kind of money, I'd pick the rolex.

Just an opinion here, but I prefer the DSSD. Trouble is, I am an Omega fan too. If you will not use the watches to their full potential, then IMHO personal preference is going to be your determining factor. I have only one, a 16610 (obviously), and would love to add a Speedy. But not at the expense of my first & only!

JMO, sounds like you'll be happy with either!
