Confession time...I lied to you guys once!!

Hi fellas,

Well you do know how I baby my watches, don't you? And you also know how much I love my Rollies and would never want even a scratch (if I can help it) on my babies.

Well, sorry fellas, but I did lie....just once!!

Of the 17 Rollies I've ever owned (including the present two), there was just one Rolex which I had really beaten the sh!t out of (even by my careful standards).

Rewind the clock back to 1997...picked up a BNIB Sub 16610, T-957XXX from Mansor's. This was way before my museum job. It was my ONE and ONLY watch then and I was working in the industry at the time. This Sub was subjected to a lot of beating what with the heavy lifting, forklift driving, pallet truck manouvering and other tough jobs associated with the industry.

Then I joined Champion Flour Mills as a Wheat Cleaning Operator. Boy, did the Sub ever get bashed around there. Even subjected to very powerful magnetic fields 'cause we had to regularly clean the magnets which separated the metal filings from the wheat as it ran through the "cleaning" system.

I finally traded in that watch back to Mansor's 3½ years later. Guess what? I had paid NZ$4,200 for it and got back NZ$4,000!! I could have gotten more, but the watch had a couple of deep dings on the side of the case, few scratches on the bracelet and definitely needed servicing and demagnetization.

So at least I realised how tough a Rolex can really be if given the rough treatment. After seeing the sorry state of that watch, I promised myself to be always very careful with my next ones. And that's one promise I kept.

JJ

Hmm, come to think of it, JJ, all those wrist shots did make me think of wheat fields.

JJ
In my experience any watch with magnetisation, generally runs way too fast, like gaining hours a day.And Knowing how anal you are about time keeping, like checking 4-5 times a day.I would doubt if your watch got (magnetised),more likely a case of to much rapid watch winding. And while we are on the subject whats all the yanklish JJ. Z instead of S, and gotten WTF its got

Padi, yes the magnetisation was immense and started to take its heavy toll on the accuracy of the watch. I took it back to Mansor's several times to have it demagnetised, but with the nature of my job at the mill, the watch was just exposed to a helluva lot of bashing and banging along the way.

I can tell you all one thing - a Sub is one tough mother and can be "driven" to the extremes. It was the ONLY Rolex I had which I gave the rough and tumble treatment. Once I started, I couldn't stop nor care. But I would NEVER do it again...that's for sure!!

And yes JJ would 100% agree on all counts, the Sub is a very tough reliable watch and it should be considering the cost.Myself was in the heavy Steel industry for almost 28 years.Working in varied jobs, extreme dust heat on machines with a lot of vibration etc.Worked myself up to shift Foreman but for about 15 years my working watch was a Poljot. Now that watch was subjected to some very hard abuse, after shift was finished just chucked in my locker till next day.Admit it was not as accurate as the Rolex, but it was not built to be a chronometer. But that watch was accurate enough to tell me
when my shift finished etc.And in those fifteen years only let me down once, dropped it on mess room floor and it stopped. So one of my workmates took it home to his father who fixed it and give it a good clean. And when I retired on my final day I burnt all my working clothes ceremonially in the furnace, and unfortunately my trusty old Poljot was in one of the pockets

That's a very touching story, Padi....but a rather sad and unfortunate end to a trusty and long-serving watch.
