I agree. However, it would seem that Rolex still has to shift units to turn a profit and ADs are in business to sell watches, not run watch museums.

I think Rolex will do whatever it takes to move watches without compromising their brand. Even if it means looking the other way whole ADs offer discounts. The market will soften, it's only a matter of time.

I actually see one major difference between Rolex and Apple.

Rolex is not a public traded corporation like Apple. There is no external pressure for short-term profit in the name of maximizing the shareholder value. When companies go public, their focus inadvertently turns to short-term gain rather than long-term sustainability; Rolex does not have this problem.

The immunity from short-term profit makes all the difference. That why Rolex gets to produce watches that are long lasting and require minimum changes. They are also not compelled to keep raising prices or churning out products to satisfy the quarterly financial results like Apple with their electronics.

When companies start to charge prices above their perceived values they tarnish their credibility, which is a crucial part of the brand image. Similarly when they flood the market with products on account of short-term demand, they erode their brand exclusivity.

These behaviors are driven by the short-term, shareholder mentality. I just don’t see Rolex go down this path any time soon.

SS? No.

If it has gold on it I will not buy without a healthy discount.

I don't know exactly what the norm is for all PMs but on my Platona purchased at the end on November I was able to save an estimated 20%. This is based on the bartering and trading of my collection. Since there was no cash exchanged it was a bit hard to be exact.

Only thing I could get was a complimentary battery change for my wife's Tag when I purchased my BLNR. Better than nothing I suppose.

I was offered $450 off a DJ41(~6%) which they would have to order to get the combo I wanted. When I asked for the discount they had to check with the manager and they allowed since I bought an SD43 recently at full MSRP. I wouldn't even ask for a hot SS Sports Model.

Yes. Three purchased from the same AD between December 2017 and November 2018. One significant discount (Polar), one asked for and politely refused (Z-Blue) and one as a small but gratefully received gesture of good will (Blusey).

I have my eye on three models in 2019. I will only buy one of them, assuming I get the chance to get near one. There will not be a discount on any of them. But I will ask, because you should always ask.

+1

I’m in the market for a TT/PM, and am curious if anyone has been getting discounts on these? Since they don’t move as quickly as SS.

If you're not getting at least 8-12% off a non sports watch from the AD, you're doing it wrong :)
I might be able to assist as well.

DJ41 in the UK struggling with any discounts. Was told on Xmas eve by an AD that it is against Rolex policy to offer discounts and any AD caught doing so would be in hot water. Not sure how true that is...

Yes. On everything I inquire about other than the usual suspects. Two days before Christmas--20% on a PM Sub. A month ago, 20% on a RG/SS Datejust w. chocolate brown dial. West coast US. I'm sure it is all inventory dependent.

Doubtful but maybe, just maybe, on a full PM piece or DJ.

What about WG Daytona on oysterflex? Can any discount be possible at an AD?

If folks in the US are hitting 10% discounts on a TTDJ41 and with the sales tax saving too I’m thinking I could probably have a mini break in the US and pick up a DJ41 for the same price I’d pay in the UK with the lack of discounts I have been offered!

Not sure how the market is on 2018 126660 but I was just paid msrp on mine two days ago.
AD made me feel like I was lucky to get a chance to buy it. Are these hard to find nowadays?

For stainless, I don't even bother asking for a discount.

For two-tone, I would expect at least 15% off.

For PM, I would expect at least 20% off.

Nowadays may be a bit harder to get these numbers, but with the right connections and relationship I think they are still possible--especially if the model is in the case already.

When I bought my BLNR last month from the Rolex Boutique which is located in a big hotel complex, I couldn’t get anything off the purchase, but I did receive 5% on a rewards card to be used towards the hotel stay or any of the restaurants in the complex. Equates to $565aud which I used the following week as I was already staying there.
