Need help for a potential 5513 purchase

Hi,
There is a 5513 for sale locally.  I tried to check the details using the information from 5513 website but I want to make sure if I don't miss anything.  I would really appreciate it if you can help.  Thanks alot.

Hard to tell for sure because there's so much glare on the photos. I can tell you that the insert pearl is way too big and shouldn't have a metal surround. What is the beginning of the serial number?

I'd suggest getting clearer photos in natural light.

What are your concerns exactly?

Yeah, I think the insert is for a 5-digit reference. Something I learned recently myself. The dial and hands look nice in those photos. Serial and inside-caseback photos?

From the serial, I can say that it is made in 1966. The seller states that it is all original. Prices vary alot on a vintae Rolex depending on the condition of the watch so I don't want to make a mistake.

Well, it's not all original, as established above, so that's a red flag for starters.

I agree with you. The seller may not know about it but at least he should not mislead.

Not all original and obviously so; so seller is either misleading or doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’d err on the side of cynicism.

I think there is another possibility that a bigger pearl was mounted by making a bigger hole on the bezel.

Ok here is the story. Seller is a watchsmith. He told me that bezel is original and he mounted the pearl but without making a bigger hole on the bezel.

I don't know. Shouldn't a meters-first dial have a long-five insert?

The case middle has a lot of pitting on the gasket mating surface. That is not good and can mean the waterproofness cannot be guaranteed anymore.

I really hate that pearl. If he is a watchmaker and didn't immediately discuss or disclose that when you first talked about the sale it is a bit of a problem.

The rest of the condition of that insert isn't great.

Case pitting isn't great.

It all depends on price of course and depends on your goals / what you want.

This is the very reason that gave me a sour taste.

I wouldn’t let a fake pearl bother me too much. A lot of old school watchmakers didn’t/don’t care about such details. They replaced an item with something that fit if they didn’t have access to an original. Who would’ve thought an original pearl mattered to anyone?

I like it. Fake pearl is easily fixed. I once saw a 5513 with a diamond instead of pearl haha.

What do you think about the price given the situation? Too steep I guess.

Fake pearl is correct, but also damaged the insert to "drill" it in. That to me effects the value.
I personally believe that in this market you can find significantly better for not MUCH higher.
It's a nice watch, but I'd continue my hunt for a stronger example, that's just me.
