This is a questionable one ...

Hello all,

I have the chance to pick this up quick but I don’t like it at first glance.

Maybe a fake, maybe customized... the movement looks OK except for the weird red screw.

The PCLs and Lugs don’t seem right. Not sure if this is allowed but what are your thoughts ?

Movement is totally genuine. The free sprung balance and microstella adjustment on the balance are the instant way to tell, and the overall finish also says it’s real. The red screw is probably done with a marker pen by a watchmaker perhaps as his personal mark of service?

As for the bracelet yes PCL’s are not correct. What number is stamped on the bracelet? The lugs appear to have been polished so it looks as if someone has customised this. But fake no.

I do not know much about watches as much as I love them and share my passion. But, I have a hard time understanding how you can say first glance when you have removed the back of someone else's watch. I would trust your judgment on the watch.

I haven’t had a chance to hold the watch. I’d be picking it up from someone who is owed money and they don’t care for watches. So at this very moment it is all up in the air.

Thank you for the insight ! I’ll get bracelet numbers shortly. I did see it’s a nice 3186 so this may be a bargain if I’m able to confirm authenticity and check on the condition of the PCLs and the lugs.

I assume it’s without box/papers? I forgot to say the lugs look to have been polished as well so it would need to go to somewhere like Rolliworks to be refinished properly if that bothers you. Yes if the price is right and the bracelet is correct it could be a bargain.

No box or papers. Correct! I’m unfortunately not stateside at the moment but if I do snatch it up I’d get it into a reputable workshop the minute international flights open up again.

Thanks again. Waiting on bracelet !

I usually do and I usually tell others the same. But in this particular case I don’t have the benefit of buying the seller.

I'd get more information if possible. If you are getting it from someone who owes you money, makes me wonder if the watch could possibly be stolen? How did the owner get the watch? How does one get and keep a Rolex when they are not into watches?

Definitely it could happen. But just things to think about.

With a lot of scams, there is typically a sense of urgency. If you go through with it, I would try to slow it down and make sure you can verify a little more history of the watch. like they say, if it is too good to be true, it probably is.

Then again, you may be getting a great watch at a spectacular price. Just be very careful, that's all I'm saying. The people on this forum appreciate and enjoy watches. I would just hate to see anything go sideways. Call me skeptical, but do your due diligence. Good luck.

Not skeptical at all, I hear you 100% the first thing I asked was where the watch came from. I’m reassured it’s legitimately owned. This isn’t urgent by any means and this is kind of my last resort in terms of getting insight ...

I already told the guy I’d take it at $3500 USD equivalent and he is accepting it at $2800 so it’s a win win for everyone if it works out.

First time I take a risk as I always buy in the US from trusted sellers but this is a piece I’d like to hold and gift to my dad for his 60th.

78790A is a proper bracelet for an ExpII. PJ code is ~2008.

They don't come with polished centers, but anybody can do that to a bracelet.

Movement alone is worth 2800. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I was able to get my hands on the watch today and see it in person. I think the owner was offended at my initial assessment of fake but such is life!

He used the watch to pay a debt to the person I will be buying from. There will be a waiting period to ensure it does not come back as stolen.

After that, watch will be sent to Rolex for basic service before any moneys are exchanged and I’ll let an independent shop take care of the refinishing afterwards.

If all checks out I’ve secured it for $3600 USD equivalent. Not bad.

Carlos, the RSC will do the bracelet refinishing (and case) as standard part of the service, to bring it back to what it should be, if you ask for it, and it won't cost any more than if you just get the movement done. That's how it is with the Hong Kong RSC anyway.

Thanks Adam! Did not know that, certainly a plus knowing that it would be brought back 100% without having to spend twice the amount.

I guess I’ll cross fingers so that international flights open up and I can fly it back to the United States. No RSC in Colombia and last time I checked they did the work in-house at authorized AD workshop or ship to Argentina.
