Explorer

Has anyone else ever considered scrapping your entire collection to just have an Explorer and being done with it all? The longer I hang around here the more I feel like it's the only watch I really need or want. I love my others, but I love the Explorer more and more by the day.

not that exact scenario but I get your point. my focus has definitely narrowed, that's for sure. for me, I could "get by" with 2, my no date Sub and 5 digit Explorer II polar.

Never thought about scrapping the whole collection but a lot of times I wear the Explorer I (114270) or a 2 line sub (14060) I think to myself....do I need anything else really? They really are that versatile and perfect.

It's liberating to get rid of everything and become a one-watch person, especially when it's a relatively simple black watch that works in all situations. I've given up a Sub, DJ, Exp II, Aqua Terra, among others, and now it's just a 76200:

No, the Explorer is a great watch, but its not great at everything.

For instance it doesn't have a date feature, so the Explorer II would be a useful addition.

Also it doesn't have a mesmerising green dial, so the LVC Submariner is also a worthy addition.

Further, it doesn't have a fluted bezel and the plain bezel can become a little tiresome after a while so a Date-Just with say a splash of Everose Gold and a Jubilee Bracelet make for a very nice piece of wrist wear on occasions.

Then there are the vintage models, which have that wonderful yesteryear charm and allure.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture.....

As I have posted previously, the Explorer was my third Rolex. Had it been my first, it might have been my only Rolex.

It is a great timepiece.

Depending on how much you are into watches a just one collection could be interesting. I could see going with two or three but the one watch would not work for me. If for no other reason than there are so many great watches out there. For years I owned a SS Submariner and a YG Daytona. It worked well but I like others also.

I get where you are coming from OP.

I think 3 is the perfect number for me. Any more than that and I feel like they aren't getting wrist time, any less, and I get a little bored.

I’m definitely a one watch guy as I don’t like having a bunch of watches so I have to make a decision daily.many times the explore 1 has been that one watch.

I had a 116620 Daytona - sold it, and more recently a 166500 ceramic daytona and a Batman GMT. Sold them both and i have a new Explorer 1. It's as comfortable as the Daytona, i love its simplicity and it's relatively discrete.

So as of now it's my only (Rolex) watch and i'm not missing the Daytona... but i am missing the Batman! Have my name down for one but if i don't get one soon, then i might have to bite the bullet and buy used.

Bottom line, i am very surprised how much i love the Explorer1 and it could def be the one watch to have, especially when you consider it's price, but for me personally I do badly want the Batman in addition.

I see your point! I have often thought my Explorer could be one of two. The other being my Daytona C. As much as I love it I wore it for two weeks straight on my vacation last summer and I was ready to look at something else. I don't think I could be a one watch guy again.

The day my Tudor Submariner 75090 (black dial/bezel) can't be repaired, the Explorer will be for me. Seriously, have had that thought.

Went through the buy what you like phase and amassed too many watches than I had fingers and toes.
Now I am dieting and hope to get to 5 watches at most that I liked and would most likely wear.

I love my Explorer, and I could absolutely see it being a 1 watch collection. That being said, I know in my head it'll be 3 total given the number of different watches I like. Personally, I like having a cheap watch in my collection to wear in situations where I think my watches might be prone to damage, but I also would like one more luxury watch just to provide a bit of variation.

Did something similar.... https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=561487

What I’ve learned from trying this, at the 2 month mark.....I like variety, but not excess, and the rotation is at 3. Will probably land at 5-6 when all said and done.

I’d say most of us are pretty into watches around here. I’m really into watches, but becoming a one watch guy was no big deal for me, as I can still admire watches without owning all of them. Not a lot of guys I know in the Porsche club own more than one Porsche, but they still enjoy talking about them all day. :)

Nah.. I couldnt live without my Speedy Pro. Being a one watch guy is really not easy for folks who really are into watches. Most people who I know and have been thinking about becoming a OWG, have gotten pretty ill with a severe flippiditis soon after :)

If I did go to 1 watch, it wouldn't be the Explorer, but hey, it's all about what makes you happy at the end of the day.

I have had only one watch for the last 15 years: an Explorer. Always thought it was the perfect one.

Now I bought a diver watch to gauge if a Submariner might be something for me. Maybe one day...

Best regards,

Well, I've too many at eleven but think 3-5 would be the sweet spot. While the Explorer is eminently adaptable, I can't see wearing the same watch to work in the garden and go to the symphony.

Why? That's kinda the point of a Rolex.

I love my Explorer, but I think it would be cool if it had the date feature. While I only have one Rolex, I also enjoy wearing my vintage 14k Hamilton Glenn. Different watches for different moods. Mark

For me as with many collectors (of anything) it’s about the ‘hunt’ for the certain object, for the certain price, located at the end of the rainbow. That’s the thrill..... starting the hunt... finding clues and threads to follow, asking questions, trying to find the edge, hitting a dead end... one step back then two large steps forward. Then finally..... victory! Incoming.... satisfaction and gratification..... all your stalking and hunting and energy and efforts coming together and you take ownership of your trophy. Then of course the buzz and thrill of the kill begins to wear off. You love your trophy and are happy to see it each day, you don’t fight or hate each other. But, you begin to wonder if this is as good as it gets, if this is ‘it’. It begins to get a little routine and perhaps boring. Do you stick with or do you sell and go on your way?

Hmmm, sounds a bit like some people’s marriage I know.
