Sub date vs no date (sorry)

Hi all I'm new to the forum and aware that I'm asking a well-covered question. But would be grateful for some advice on my particular situation.

Basically a couple of months ago I picked up a sub date from an AD. But since then I can't seem to stop thinking I should have gotten the no date instead. Truth be told I had wanted the no date before buying but then got lucky that the AD had the date so had to act given the current climate.

My basic question is should I try to switch somehow? I think I might wind up losing $ if I can't find the no date at an AD anytime soon/have to buy elsewhere. Would that be dumb? (my GF thinks it would be!).

In case relevant I already have an Explorer 1 (no date obvs).

If you don't need to have your name on the warranty card, maybe work with one of the trusted sellers here and see if you can swap... Otherwise you could sell private (maybe at a gain given the scarcity of SS professional models) and get on a list for the SubC at retail. Theoretically you won't lose anything or very little, but you may have to wait (again unless you go the trusted seller route). Even with a wait, you have that Explorer to hold you over.

Welcome to the forum
You will get 50/50 answers. Which tells you that there isn’t a wrong answer. It all depends on what you like, what you’re looking for and what you have in your collection
To dine date is crucial, others like the symmetric dial of the no date sub

I wet fit date and absoluteove it and would do the same 100 times over
Good luck!

Welcome

I think you should give it some time, you may end up liking it. If not, you can always flip and get the Submariner at minimal loss

Ok. My experience. Bought sub no date for 9 months and keep bugging me that whenever i wanna check the date, my watch shows only time. Finally sold it and bought GMT II (cuz i think it's like waste to put about $1,000 more for only date, so justified myself that date&gmt hour gonna be worth for $1,000 additional). Now I've used for an year and so satisfied

Oh... And for reference I have a SubC and Explorer because I like the lack of date and no cyclops (I prefer no cyclops). If my GMT had the option I would go sans cyclops on that as well.

I've had both and they are each nice in their own right. If you prefer a no date, you should be able to sell your date and pick up a no date and not lose money. When I first got the Sub C date I didn't like the cyclops and then it grew on me. I also like the cyclops on my SD43 in comparison to my DSSD and think each has its own personality. I think that the cyclops is so ingrained in people's minds as the standard for the Rolex brand that most people tend to like it on the watch.

+ 1 for date as you already have a no date watch. Variety and usefulness wins IMO.

Thanks all very much for the advice, many great points! And thanks very much for the welcome to the forum. I will hang on to it for a bit longer and keep trying to bond with it. I definitely don't want to regret anything so good to be (more) sure.

You’re on the right track. +1 for the date. You have a no date. Keep it a while. The date sells at a small premium over the no date, here in the US. You should be able to swap even, but give it a while. YMMV, so sayeth a habitual trader who is constantly distracted by the next shiny object.

There's only so many ways we can say this over and over, so I'll be entertaining.

Your yacht sank, your clothes are tattered, but you wash ashore on a deserted island. Luckily so does your ice chest. You look down and see your watch is still on your arm. The watch you'll be looking at for days, weeks, and maybe even years before rescue. What watch do you see?....

Care not what others feel when they see your watch. What do you feel? Wear the one that FEELS good.

Well I just bought a 114060 and I have always preferred a date so we will go though this journey together. All my watches have a date function so I figured I would branch out. If we both feel off after a month we can trade!

I believe every watch , requires a date complication, period. Look at the watch, don’t fumble for the phone, etc....
There is a reason, the no date is less than the date, no date.
Keep it

As someone who has deliberated the same question for some time, I feel your predicament. However I think the key here is to not rush into any decision. Preferences, taste, requirements can change over time. Give it a few more months wearing the Submariner Date and take it from there.

If it's going to be your only watch then get the Submariner Date for functionality otherwise definitely get the Submariner for purity.

I did the opposite. I am much happier with a date. Therefore, I would not do that. Also, you have an Explorer, which meets your no date needs.

If you did trade down to the 114060, then maybe swap the Explorer out for something else?

Do you need the date.
Do you use the date.
If not get the no date. This has been a ying/yang topic for the ages. Search the forum, plenty of threads with a relative even split.
Symmetry versus cyclops.

I prefer the one true Submariner but I would and can happily live with the date model.

.....and welcome to the forum, congrats on the Submariner purchase. Pics, pics, pics.....

I like having the date on my watch. I also like how Rolex do it with a cyclops (mostly) because my visual acuity is going down with age. However, I also have a Z-Blue, which I love wearing and the absence of a date doesn't seem to matter at all. So I like a date function but it doesn't matter in reality. The time and date are always on my phone, or in my car, or on my PC. Wearing a nice mechanical watch is just an indulgence. So have the one(s) you really want. And love the hell out of it. You only live once.

I have owned all of the Submariners in every metal combination and can tell you that it going to come down to personal preference. I prefer the ND model as I think the dial is perfectly balanced and you get everything else that the Submariner has to offer. Great case, dial, bracelet and the wonderful Glide Lock clasp. As far as needing a date that is a personal preference. I knew the date yesterday, so, I know the date tomorrow and so forth. I also know which months have how many days and I even know when the next leap year will occur. I know the Submariner and the Explorer are different but I would choose between the two as they are very similar. I would get the ND and look at a Polar Explorer II to have some difference in the collection. Buy what you want and wear it. Also, you should be able to do a straight trade on the Date for a ND of similar wear with a Trusted Seller. DavidSW always seem to have the biggest selection of pre-owned ND watches so see what you can work out. Good luck.

Your Submariner Date will be easy to trade in on the "no-date" variant. You've got to get what you like or you'll never be happy. I personally like having the date and seeing that little cyclops magnifier.

I have the 114060 because I just do not like the cyclops magnifier. If the magnifier weren't there, I would probably have bought the Date.
The magnifier just reminds me of this:
