Toyota Tundra

I love Toyota’s especially the Tundra. I mean who doesn’t?

I am looking into picking up another vehicle.
I am stuck between picking up an older model. A 2008 Tundra Crewmax Lmt. Not many miles as far as a Toyota goes, around 80,000. New Frame new this new that etc etc.
Still expensive, not as expensive as Brand new.

I am also looking at a 1794 Edition 2014 ( First Year and my Favorite year)
55,000 miles. 13,000 more than the 2008.

I am also being harassed by my local Toyota salesman to just lease a new 2019 1794.

I don’t know what the hell to do.

What would you guys do and or what similar situations have you found yourselves in, what was your final decision? How did it work out?

I get the sense that Toyota trucks and SUVs hold their value really well, to the point that they're some of the few cars worth buying new. So I'd probably get a new one, to have today's tech and safety features.

How many miles do you drive and what do you do with the truck?

If it is a lot or use one as intended I may think twice about leasing. But if it is a toy and low miles it may have some benefits.

Of the other two I would go with the 2014. $2,000 per model year and less miles.

The frame replacement on the 2008, was it due to the rust issues/recall???

I love the Tundra and own several for work. It really depends on price. What are they asking for the 08? I personally dont see the value in paying the premium for the 1794 but thats just me. We put 25k miles a year on them and never have issues. I have 2 that are over 300k miles now.

I can’t see myself doing more than 12,000 miles in a year?

I won’t be doing any plowing. Just driving it for recreation. Work is less than a mile. I walk and or ride a bike sometimes.

The frame was replaced due to rust.

There’s no wrong choice but a 08 has a lot more fart in the seats.

I personally wouldn’t lease a truck. If you’re considering an ‘08, then you’re not the kind of person seduced by the “it has to be new all the time” bug. In my opinion leasing is better for luxury sedans that may be buggy and lose resale relatively quickly - the kind of car you don’t necessarily want to hold onto for 10 years. Toyota trucks certainly aren’t that.

I would either buy new, or get the ‘14. It seems like you’d prefer the ‘14 but are considering the ‘08 as it’s more practical.

I love Toyota. My ‘16 4Runner is the first car that I’ve ever really loved. I’m currently debating running this one to the ground or stepping up to a Landcruiser. Both are tempting options.

Easy. You already said the 2014 is your favorite year. I would get that one. And wait for one that sings to you.

I love the 08 as it is my favorite model, but the 14 is my favorite model of the 1794.
I should have clarified that in my original post.

The 08 has been my number one and has always been my favorite year. I know it is old, but at 90000 miles it hasn’t even been broken in giving it’s reputation.

The 1794 is a particular Trim option and was first released in 2014. That being said the 14 is my favorite year for that model. It is more mo ey, but definitely is a luxury when it come to trucks. Lexus doesn’t make a truck, but if they did, it’s this.

I don’t know

I have an '08 DC short bed Limited. I've replaced the radiator and brakes once. It's due for brakes again this year at 91K. There was a leak in the forward differential out of my 7 year/100K extended warranty. It was something like $1500 labor for a $12 gasket. I asked the service manager to complain to Toyota on my behalf and, to my surprise, they covered it gratis. Also replaced the rear seal "while they were in there".
I'm not sure they can be killed. It still runs like new and feels as solid as day one.
There is a 2" long split in the driver's bolster, but not enough to do anything about. The NAV screen is tiny and voice commands never worked, but it's pretty impressive overall. I only use it for hunting and trips to the feed store now, so only put about 2K/year on it.
I paid $42K out the door and just KBBed it for around $18K. Almost free.
The gas mileage is crappy - 13/15 or so, but regular gas and that 5.7 gets up and goes.

Toyota Tundra

From a guy who runs a Toyota Dealer...Tundra and Tacoma hold their value really well. 1794 is great choice. Toyota leases haven’t been very attractive lately. If the 1794 is $13k more I’d go that way. You like it better. Think of it this way...to go from a 2008 to a 2014 is 6 years newer for 13k. 13k divided by 6 years is $2166 per year to go newer. That’s a bargain. If you could trade up annually to a newer vehicle for $2166 we’d have a line out the door. Go for the 2014 1794.

I wouldn’t lease either. Especially if you drive a lot. My last truck was a lease and had to get rid of it early because of miles. Plus I like to customize my vehicles. Can’t do that with a lease either. The 1794 is a nice truck so personally I would go for that one regardless of having more miles.

I just bought a 2018 Toyota Tacoma 4 door TRD sport fully loaded new from the dealer back in august. While it does hold its resale value better than any other truck, and its reliability is outstanding that's really what your paying for as Toyota is behind the ball when it comes to its interiors and amenities. The Tundra does have a nice exterior but its interior is definitely very dated.

No real update since 2007. But I'm used to mine and it's just fine as a hunting/hauling junk/feed store machine.

They probably should do a real update and perhaps expand their color palette some. Mine is Timberline Mica, which is a dark green metallic that I still like a lot, but greens got dropped by a lot of makers around 2009-10 for some reason.

That green is a very nice color. I missed an 08 with 63000 Miles on it Yesterday with that green color. Thing was sweet man. I called Thursday night 2 hours before they closed and told them I’d be up there Friday to leave a deposit. It sold in that 2 hour time frame.
I was bull. It averages out to almost 6000 miles a year.

I wish Toyota would update the powertrain though I’m sure it is the reason for reliability. The 5.7l v8 is ancient and is at the back of the pack for fuel economy. Toyota also had an episode of the air injection pumps failing just put of warranty. They weren’t backing their product for a few years causing owners to shell out thousands to merely pass emissions and keep them in the road. They finally made it right and extended the warranty and reimbursed those who shelled out of pocket.

Thanks. I would post a pic but I can't figure out how to make the file small enough to fit the minimum dimensions here (so I gave up a while ago). Rennlist has an option to drag any pic into a pop up page that will resize about anything. Otherwise the sites seem to be set up identically (except for the multitude of rules here).

Last year sold my 2011 tundra crewmax 2wd with 51k miles at CARMAX for 21k, held its value way more than we thought. With high gas prices and our kids out the house now it wasn’t getting much play time. We enjoyed it. Can’t go wrong with Toyota, I would say watch your gas mileage if that’s a factor for you. What will you use it for.
