Suggestions - mechanical watch for backpacking
I travel to some potentially dodgy/poor places in my free time
I’d like to take a mechanical watch with me on a nato to feel like a real explorer Something with a vintage-y feel without the big brand appeal/cost Any suggestions? |

Seiko SKX007 and call it good. Hamilton field watch could be another option.

Cool. I’ve got the skx009 on nato and love it. But I don’t get that vintage vibe

Christopher Ward and Steinhart both have vintage looking models, and offer quality Swiss made mechanical watches.

An IWC Mark XII or XV pilots watch would work well but set you back around 2,5k. I have had a Mark XV as a beater for the last 20 years and took it anywhere, very much under the radar as well. If you want to go cheaper I would start w looking at IWCs and Omegas from around 1950-1975. Manual wind IWCs w Cal 88 or 89 are starting far below 1k and the steel models might work w a nato.

This, can't go wrong with the Seiko 007. Wear mine as a daily and I cycle to work, do all sorts and it hasn't a single mark, I just don't know how that's possible, when I only wear my Rolex etc on occasion and baby them and they've ended up with more scratches and dings! Annoying!

SKX007 or 009 is the best choice.
Everytime I take something else immediately regret not taking Seiko diver. Sent from my SM-N935F using Tapatalk |

SKX007 is a good option. I wear mine in dodgier urban settings. My favourite hiking watch is a Sinn U1...on either NATO or bracelet. I’ve hiked with mine on 4 continents...glaciers, mountain peaks, deserts, and jungles!
