I was thinking of getting one of these case backs for my Daytona. So I Called my Rolex dealer and found that they will not install this for me. They are not allowed to do any work on Rolexes that is not authorized by Rolex. Moreover, it got me thinking that if I even needed to send the watch in to Rolex for service, I would have to have original case back put on before sending it in, correct?. What a pain! But I am still torn because this is super cool. I may by it anyway.

True. However, replacing a case back takes only seconds with the right tools.
Might want to try finding a local watchmaker, preferably w/ a Rolex parts account, who will facilitate your needs.

I just got off the phone with a local jeweler that said he can easily do this for me; although he was not enthusiastic about it. He said he doesn't expect it to pass the pressure test. I am going to decide in the next day or two what to do.

What's the worst that could happen in a test?

If you get one of Thomas Preik's and have it installed by a competent watchmaker you should be fine. Have your watchmaker run a pressure test for good measure and if it passes its just as water resistant as the original Rolex caseback.

I had one for my Daytona installed and pressure tested just fine. In the words of my watchmaker, "oh yea you can swim in this no problem." I don't do any more than casual swimming with it so I didn't press him if it will be good to 100m or whatever the Daytona is. If you're going that far down you'll want to ensure during the pressure testing that you test it that deep.

Bring it down to him and show him and have him pressure test it - you both will be pleasantly surprised

Oh, good :) I'm liking these transparent case-backs.

I wish more marine gear was the sams SS grade Rolex uses. Everything here is constantly needing buffing/polishing. All of this rain isn't helping anything. Hope the weather is better down your way, Stevo.

Nope, just reflections. That shot was taken by the owner of the photo/video shop I deal with (my lack of photographic skills is well documented here ). He placed the watch on the floor and took the shot from about 10 feet away with a lens the size of a bazooka, then cleaned up the image for me.

I have bought two from Thomas recently, one for a Speedie moonphase for which I sent the watch to him and he sent it back with a back for my GMT2c which I have not yet had fitted as there is still 6 month warranty on it.....

Both are beautifully made and it took him the 4 weeks he said it would take to make for the Speedie.

I would be real curious as to how the caseback fits on your GMT-C (116710). I fitted Thomas' revised caseback on my GMT-C. Although it threaded correctly, the caseback seam did not sit flush. The caseback on the GMT-C has a 90 degree bevel that is seated inside the case rather than sitting on top of the case like on the old/new Sub or old GMT.


Thomas' new caseback sits on top of the case on my traditional GMT (16710) and it fits and looks great!

I am real curious whether Thomas has a different caseback for the GMT-C. Let us know how the caseback fits on your GMT-C.

I have had the TP caseback fitted to my GMT2c and it fits perfectly, is not any higher than the original, has been pressure tested and everything!

It does not feel any different to the normal caseback and you cannot see a lot as the weight is so big!
I do like it so I'm happy with it.
