Rehaut/Chapter Ring..They're Not The Same Thing..
We're pretty flexible on The Rolex Forum...and we generally know what the members are talking about.. But horologically speaking, we think that the members should always have as much knowledge as possible..
Rehaut is defined as a "flange". Chapter Ring is a "segmented circle". In horology, le rehaut can be: 1) a rotating internal bezel (lunette intérieure rotative) as we find in this reference: "Une couronne rotative pour le réhaut d'orientation et du compte à rebours," which translates as: "A [second] crown for adjusting the [internal] elapsed time counter." An example would be the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Dualmatic or the Hamilton Khaki Navy. 2) in a fixed configuration, a flange which raises the crystal above the dial and hands. On the Rolex Submariner, for example, the rehaut exists in the same plane as the external rotating (elapsed time) bezel. The area under the crystal is properly referred to as the rehaut, in French. In English the proper term would be a "flange." The flange (or rehaut) is sometime mistakenly referred to as the "chapter ring." However, this area is not the chapter ring, which is the circular ring on a clock or watch dial on which the minutes (and sometimes the hours) are engraved, attached, or painted. In French again, a chaper ring would be "tour d'heures" (hours ring). The particular chaprter ring depicted below is colloqually called chemin de fer (literally "way of iron" or railroad). Perhaps to put the idea of the flange into some perspective, note that a flange is defined as: a spreading or flaring part; a projecting or protruding rim, edge, rib, or collar used to strengthen an object, hold it in place, or attach it to another object. In a gasketed joint, the flange performs all three functions of strengthening an object, holding it in place, and attaching it to another object. (source unknown)

So technically we should do away with CRB and call it branded rehaut or branded flange. BR or BF.

Or "RRB" for "Rolex Rehaut Branding"?
Anyway, you are quite right! Thanks for the clarification!

Engraved Rehaut Branding. ERB that's my vote. Someone should start a poll.

That would probably be more appropriate.
I'm not a fan of the branding at all and I'm hoping it is short lived but all indications are it is here to stay.

On that we agree... I find it cheezy and totally unneccessary.

Well, it depends how you look at the word branding. Branding in this case I think is identifying a particular brand (Rolex) and not marking with a hot iron. Engraving is a particular type of marking of an item that is unrelated to branding imo. I'm not an advocate of the ERB/ER/CRB et al so let the masses decide.

On a completely unrelated item I just noticed that the posting times are 1 hour behind the actual time. Does it bother you when your post is one hour off or do you demand precise accuracy. Now lets start a debate over precision vs. accuracy.

Well said Larry. While we all have a lot of fun, forums such as this also provide one of the best learning tools available.

We better keep it simple, or we'll be explaining it to all the newbies every other post.
Not to mention the old herders who will forget every other day. How about the Rolex Ring |

Not being a snob but im shocked on a rolex forum this subject even came up.
I've never known why anyone called it a chapter ring on the forum. But its good clarification for those who thought it was so. |

The point was we have tons of watch experts on this a rolex forum, and im shocked that older members who know tons about watches thought it was called a chapter ring.
I've been on forums that the members werent near as active, Rolex wasnt the #1 subject, and it had always been called the correct term. Clearly rolex wearers are a cut above the rest, but most wearers can care less about terms of watches. But those rolex wearers who are active on a rolex forum, know more about rolex watches then nearly everyone else. It was shocking to me that this thread was needed to clarify for more mature forum members. Now I guess members will be more aleatory to the fact. |

RRB for CRB
GREAT info and afford Larry, I glad we all are not perfect human being and we all strive to do better by replacing the wrong term with right one.

How about RRB (Rolex Rehaut Branding ) to replace the wrong term of CRB ( Chapter Ring Branding)? RRB correct term instead of CRB? any good?
