I personally prefer pre-ceramic
It seems people who wear larger watches and became a fan after 2008 are supercase fans. |

I remember there was a thread here ~5 years ago that detailed exactly this. That the Submariner Ceramic supercase looked more like the original Submariners while the 5 digits did not.

I agree. Although the Maxi case is growing on me, I do feel it's to square and bulky. The 5 digit case is just far more aesthetically pleasing.

I actually thought about selling my 16610 for the newer model but the more I looked at it I found that I prefer mine so I'm keeping it..

I find the Maxi case just too large for my wrist. That's enough reason for me to not own one. I had a 114060 but it didn't last long; I really preferred the feel of the 14060 on my wrist. I do think a major advantage of the Maxi is that it can withstand more polishes.

5 digit for me. My point of comparison is the 16610 sub and 116710LN GMT that I own...I prefer the case shape and profile of the 5 digit models and also the smaller, more delicate appearing hands, which goes along with the smaller markers.

Truthfully, I can't believe this subject is still being discussed 10 years after the fact. If you don't like the modern Submariner which IMO is a masterpiece, stick with the previous generation with thin case, small lugs and small pointy crown guards.

I think the fact it is still talked about drives home just how divisive and odd the maxi case is. I prefer to buy new watches with the newest advancements in movements and bracelets, and I'm sure others do to. Thus the bemoaning over Rolex acquiescing to the trend of larger cases with the introduction of the 6 digits. I guess deep down many of us hope our sport-bitching will eventually be noticed and Rolex will coddle us with slimmer-lugged divers in the future!

Leave them alone, it's just the thin case lovers that have insecurity issues. They like to post on here every now and then to give each other high fives.

I didn't read that at all. Openly airing his disappointment with the current generation of the most iconic watch ever is not the same as stifling opposing views. Quite the opposite, actually. Being frustrated with a response that was purely pedantic has nothing to do with opposing viewpoints.

I own a 6 digit sub and a BLNR and am finally coming to the realization that I just cant deal with the maxi case. Its just too unaesthetic and blocky for a 10K watch. Terrible design choice on an otherwise perfect watch. Glidelock, maxi dial, ceramic bezel, all beautiful. But the lugs just ruin it for me. Which sucks because the bracelet is a joke on 5 digits but for us sub lovers the only other option is wait for rolex to release the 126610 which will undoubtedly have slimmer lugs, but that could be years and probably will be scarce as hell.

There will come a day when we fondly remember the slim and graceful lugs of the maxi case...

Groundhog thread...
Why the Maxi case? Just a thought Maxi case: Beautiful or ugly? Does anyone else here not prefer the Supercase Rolex models much?? What is the point of Super Case? 116610LN/116610LV/114060 Owners: Square Lugs -- Like or Dislike? One heck of an ugly lump...... Submariner...it's those thick lugs! What I Do Not Like About The Sub 114060 I for one am hoping for a sub redesign... Who’s thinking slimmer lugs? Anyone else trying to avoid Rolex models with fat lugs? This list is not meant to be exhaustive.

I was surprised that when Rolex went Maxi and made the watches overall larger, the dial stayed exactly the same size. More bezel and more case, but not more dial. That was disappointing to me. I'd prefer a bigger watch, but not simply more bulk around the same display area.

I'm not a fan but I think it depends on your wrist size too. I've seen some wrist shots from larger wristed members and it looks just fine, but on those of us with smaller wrists it doesn't look as proportional.

For the next revision, I would love the see the Submariner (and eventually the GMT Master and Explorer II) go to more tapered lugs. It happened with the Datejust. The SD43, though too large, is well proportioned. Thankfully, the Daytona lines have remained classic. Common Rolex, bring back a more sinewy Sub and GMT!

⬆️⬆️⬆️ exactly! This has definitely been covered !
IMO...there’s plenty of diversity in the modern Rolex lineup for case shapes & lug sizes offered. There’s sport/professional models with....slimmer lugs, bigger cases, slimmer lugs smaller cases, super-case thicker lugs, and so on.... Not always easy to get, but the choices are there. If you’re talking specifically “Submariner”, and you want slimmer lugs...then you’re left with one choice...non-ceramic. All personal preference, no wrong opinions or answers IMO. |
