As far as watches, I don't think you will be ostracized if you wear a Rolex but Maine as you may know is not a fancy place. If you want to fit in, I'd wear a G-Shock (or maybe a hemp bracelet, haha). If you want to look like a prosperous visitor "from away" either of your choices are very classy sports watches that are waterproof enough to withstand a few juicy lobster dinners. When I'm in town I usually wear my Black Bay.

Great insight! Thanks for the reply.

Beautiful shot and PADI turtle

Nothing says “rugged outdoors” like a platinum bezel that scratches if you look at it wrong.

I’d go with a 216570. Don’t have one? Well? This is your chance.

Tough call but I would say the slight edge goes to the YM. The dial!

For lobster, only a Yachtmaster will do.

Thanks! I love these "Can my Rolex do ....?" threads because I realized my $300 Seiko Turtle PADI can do everything a $10,000+ Rolex can.

Here my Seiko PADI was mountain biking:

My personal preference is for the Seamaster. Every time. Not a YM fan at all.

Of the two choices it would be the Omega. I would use it as an excuse to pickup a Seiko as a better and bring my YM to wear to less harsh events on the trip. The Seiko would be for the rugged spots. Not that Rolex or Omega can't take it but the appropriate watch/tool for the task ay hand. You could probably wear a suit and tie the whole time and be fine but that is not the right choice for the activity. Have fun.

Figured I’d close the loop on this dilemma. So I was on my way out the door and realized I had forgot I owned a watch that would be PERFECT for this trip. Here’s a pic of the watch in action today.

It was a fantastic trip. Great hikes. Great food. All in all just so much fun!

Wear the Yacht Master, very easy to find a new one if you loose it.

Planet Ocean for me.

Lighter for hiking with, more adjustable bracelet and less scratch prone bezel. Still very classy for dining out.

While I'd wear my 16570 - given only the choice between YM and PO I'd go with the PO. I think it's more "laid back" corresponding to a vacation of hiking and (lobster) dining.

Kind regards,
Oliver

You should consider focusing on the gear that you will be taking. Many hikers will admit that they sometimes forget to pack an important item in their backpack, especially in the spring when they are a bit out of practice. Every backpacking party should carry the Ten Essentials. These essentials are a topographic map, compass, extra food, extra clothing, firestarter, matches, sun protection, a pocket knife, first-aid kit, and flashlight. I would usually read up on places like Amazon reviews to see some good guides on certain products.
As for the kids, each child should have a whistle around his or her neck, plus a pack filled with rain gear, a warm hat, gloves, food and water. Add to that a space blanket to wrap around them and sit pad to keep them off the wet and cold ground.

Sounds like you know quite a fair bit about hiking. ANy specific blog that you follow? I was planning to leave town with the boys and hike somewhere, set up camp.

My question to you all is which watch to take? Your choices are:

1) Rolex Yacht-Master (blue dial)
2) Omega Planet Ocean in titanium

Would appreciate your thoughts and comments. Thanks!

Man that PO is awesome. I would take that as the titanium a bit less likely to scratch.

Well...Yeah other than the fact that I like to collect all sorts of fancy watches (not too expensive) I do quite a fair bit of hunting. I've witnessed way too many times how newbie hiker/hunters head out and it kind of bugs me. Gear is always a main factor for me, reading reviews/guides at http://huntingfishingplus.com/ really helps me decide on what I want. I actually like to get some good gear for my kids too. I take them hunting with me. Kids are like little mirrors, reflecting the things they see and hear the adults if their lives do and say. Hunting is no exception.
