of course you can daily any BMW long term, just that its going to cost ya .. :D

If you keep up with the preventive maintenance, you'll be fine.

If you want care-free long term reliability, get the Lexus

I owned a 2009 550 and after the problems I had with it, I would never buy a BMW again.

I am on my third Mercedes and that is now my brand.

2008 550i here. Problems with the idrive were so severe I dumped it after a year. Took a bath, but it became too much to tolerate. Center console and instrument cluster wouldn’t turn on at times. Very dangerous. Literally everything I’ve owned since has been better. It was sad turn off events because I was very much a BMW guy before that having owned and loved a 330i and had a number of different convertibles in the family over the years.

Japanese cars and their wild designs just don’t last. Except for maybe the Nissan Z, I can’t think of one design that’s withstood the test of time.

The M5 will look hot today and hot 10 years from now. And it probably will still be running too. Lol.

I just leased a M550i. I’m 52 and despite loving the M cars (I’ve driven many of them at the M Track Days and my dealer) the ride is just too harsh. I think that for those who want a more sporty looking and better performance car, the M___i models are great. It is plenty fast (0-60 in 3.6 seconds) and very comfortable. Great daily driver.

Had my 2020M550i for a year now. Very happy with it!
Like you said, not as rough as my prior M cars, but great acceleration and comfort.

Lease- M car.

Buying- Lexus.

As other have stated BMW has lost a lot in reliability as it seems they’ve shifted to vehicles for lease rather than purchase. I wouldn’t own a 2005 or newer BMW without it being leased or under an iron clad CPO warranty.

Unfortunately they’re not what they used to be.

The s63 engine is not known for its reliability. Twin turbos, and a fit that shoehorned into the engine bay make for a bad combo if real work is needed.

I explored multiple cars with the s63 engine when I was buying my last vehicle about 1.5 years ago. Mostly 550s and 650s with AWD. Ultimately, I learned enough to steer me away from it despite loving it conceptually. I wanted it, but ultimately the practical side of me won out.

If you do buy an m5, my advice would be to not keep it too far past the factory warranty.

I say this as someone who drove a 335 (n54) to 140k+ miles. My experience was good, but I did replace both turbos in that car at 43k. The car was at the dealership getting turbos replaced as the factory warranty expired. What would have been a $6500 job at that point cost me $12, which was actually a fee for the loner vehicle.

I moved over to a supercharged Audi.

If I were you, I’d certainly go with the Lexus here

BMWs are lovely and so much fun, but these new age twin turbo cars aren’t my cup of tea. I’m sure others will feel differently, but that’s just me

Had a 2012 X5 with s63 and lucky it was a CPO with extended warranty. After a year of ownership, BMW bought it back. Fun to drive when not in shop...

I was a BMW fan for many years, but my last experience (320, 2017-19) was so traumatic - relatively speaking - that I will never own another. Go with Lexus.

I’ve sworn off BMW. In my experience they do not stand by their product. Get the Lexus.

In January 2015 I bought a New 2014 F13 M6 Competition. It's a Blast and a hell of a daily driver with 600hp, 516 ib.ft of torque 0-60 in 3.9 sec. I did blow the engine around 20k miles but BMW replaced it and it is running strong! I want a new car but I don't need one as the M6 Competition checks All the boxes for me. Been considering a tune but I don't track it or race it. I drive it hard but really don't need the extra horse power.

In conclusion: I would buy the M5 Competition.

M6s were really nice. when the m8 first came out i really disliked it in comparison to the m6 but i gotta say when i started seeing them in person i became a huge fan. those things lease super well right now too...there are deals for leasing an m8 that come out to the same price as a c63 lol, insane

A very fun and beautiful vehicle, but a blown engine at 20k miles is exactly my reason to recommend avoiding these vehicles outside of factory warranty. Imagine paying for that repair out of pocket at 50k miles as the car drops warranty. Yikes!

Pretty much a freak accident. One of the turbo fans hit the casing, sent metal fragments into the engine and it lost compression. BMW's are good cars and the M's are Fantastic! IMHO

I have a 2019 M5 and it’s been great. I drive a lot, too.....I’ve had it a year and it has 25k miles on it already. I think the only issue I’ve had was with a door handle (which was fixed under warranty).

I had a 2018 M550i for 2 years before the M5 and it was great through 45k miles. The G30/F90 chassis has been solid.

I had a M6 Gran Coupe before that and it’s night and day due to the AWD in terms of the power.

In terms of Lexus, they were really at the top of their game back when I owned them (early 2000s). They are all pretty pedestrian now, including the LC. I wouldn’t buy one now.

I would choose the Lexus for the interior alone.
Beautiful car

I would vote M5 out of the two. Never been a fan of Lexus, especially the LC500.

But honestly as several others members mentioned, I would step down to either the 550 or 540 for a daily.

I had an RS7 for ~ 1 year as a daily and it just becomes too much car to be just racking on miles on (I drive 20K miles a year) - especially fighting through freeway traffic etc. I simultaneously had an A6 Diesel that turned into my DD and was a significantly easier car to live with day to day. Eventually sold the RS7 are it was good at many things, great at nothing!!

The drop between a 550 and M5 isn't incredibly great iirc? Is Mercedes an option? They have the E63s which I believe uses a twin turbo twin scroll v8 paired with a 48v starter/generator/hybrid boost that makes it really smooth. I've heard they are pumping up that eboost system significantly.
