Would you take a Breguet Marine 5817 to a Euro trip

The question is in the title. I am debating whether to keep it in a bank safe or wear it on our European trip in Portugal/Lisbon and France/Paris. I would definitely hesitate taking a Rolex but this one is not well known

I don’t travel a lot but my opinion is if you are nervous about wearing it then leave it at home. One less thing to worry about when traveling.

Travel with a G-Shock.

However, I did wear my 22k Charles Frodsham to London and did as I always do--keep it very well up my sleeve. It's invisible to others, but satisfying for me.

Yes, it’s very good everyday watch. Do you have any gmt watches in your collection because it would be a better companion for this trip?

I’ve worn my 5817 on many European trips, never had a problem.

Why wouldn’t you? What’s the issue?
I hope this isn’t another security question. You have more chance getting your phone stolen or car accident. Not sure what spreads this unnecessary fear of wearing a watch. For the love of god please wear your watches and use them.

If insured, yes. If not, so many other watches that I would not have to worry about one way or another.

I personally would not. Although, I wear my RG 5817 around New York City with no problem and honestly get more comments on my salmon dial Kurono Tokyo (ie. the 5817 seems to fly very under the radar).

Since until now only US citizens answered …
I’m from Europe and visit cities like Paris, London, Berlin, Lisboa, Barcelona… very often
Just wear your watch !! Can you get robbed ? Ofcourse you can but what is the chance ? As good as zero

Really, Google the statistics
Google robbery and crime US vs Europe
It’s MUCH safer in Europe

That said I would not wear an iced out gold Rolex in the subway (short sleeves ) but then again I would simply never wear such an ugly in your face watch

Thank you for spreading more sanity about this topic. Completely correct. I wonder if this is an American bias frankly.

A lot of friends and friends of friends getting their watches stolen in Europe (sometimes in a violent fashion). For me it isn’t worth it. You will probably be worried about the watch and enjoy the trip less as a consequence.

*Sigh*

1. Europe is a big place comprised of dozens of countries, cultures and social-economic profiles.
2. France and Portugal aren’t even close to being dangerous. Chances are, no matter what you’re wearing, you will see others with something better.
3. Don’t be a loud, flash git, use common sense and you’ll be fine.
4. Even the active thieves won’t care about a Breguet.

Quick googles:

You are more than TWICE as likely to be burglarized in Paris than in New York City.

Robbery rates are SIX times higher in Barcelona than NYC.

I think you are not facing reality here.

Just my opinion, OP should wear a G-Shock, maintain situational awareness, be very careful with currency and credit cards, do not accept a drink from the younger woman at a bar who somehow seems to be interested.

I'm not saying all of Europe is a crime-ridden wasteland, just that saying there is no crime in urban areas known for high crime rates is irresponsible. You can get robbed anywhere, a certain level of care when traveling is common sense.

I own 4 5817s they are amazing for their under the radar nature. I think just being on rubber automatically makes it go unnoticed you can spot an oyster or jubilee bracelet from a mile away. A breguet on rubber could be anyrhing.

I wear mine everywhere even to the gym.

That said if youre worried dont bring. Youll enjoy the vacation just as much without it I promise.

Just wear and enjoy…..I can say I partly live in Paris and only had two incidents in 20 years of so. It was a Kermit in an alley and bag with UG Nina got nicked from my car on “something on your car” scam. Got the UG back through a friend but lost bag, iPad etc. Totally avoidable if I just drive off, stupidly curiosity got the better of me ;-).

You can get robbed anywhere. Including your convenience store at home before you leave home. If one is that concerned don’t go. These discussions make it seem like there are bands of thieves lurking in all travel destinations waiting for all of us selected watch enthusiasts. Keep your watch hidden and just wear it! I’d be more worried of someone trying to take my wallet on a subway than the apparent high society watch patrol looking for me.

Regardless of the city, region, country, continent...if you had the concern for the watch then perhaps that isn't the best country to visit.

What about your own safely?

But if you feel safe going, then you Breguet should be fine.
