What should my next Patek be?

I have two Pateks. A 5167 and a 5990 and looking to add to my collection. Going through the current line up it seems like there are really hard to get watches that sell way above sticker or really easy to get watches that seem like they sell for much cheaper on the gray market or they are heavily discounted. Any watches that are relatively easy to get but kind of still hold their value ?

Right now I’m leaning towards a 5205R black dial. Ad can get me one in a month or two.

Yeah. That’s why I’m kind of thinking the 5205.

5205 approved. It is a nice dressy watch to add to your collection.

Is that 5980 black yours?

just got a call from AD. i am with you on this boat. i have bought from them way back 1999 starting with annual calendars then 5711 (before the craze), now when I ask if I can buy 5740 or 5968, he was frank with me. He said he will prioritize those buying minute repeaters, perp chrono and other high end slow moving items. He will allocate them first and he said not to get my hopes up unless I buy one of those hard to sell items. The truth hurts :)

Need to drop 6 figures to get another 6 figure watch
Times are tough.

@OP: Get an RG 5711 or 5712.

I think the 5205r would round out your collection very nicely. It also sounds like it's within reach at your AD.

5205 is great. Give it another year and there wont be too much of a wait on 5740. They seem to be churning them out!!

I can recall Thierry saying in an interview with Hodinkee that Aquanaut was a younger person's watch. If an AD is asking to buy a minute repeater or a PCC in order to get an Aquanaut I don't think many young people can get an Aquanaut.

I think the demand may have decreased. I don't think TS will increase production as he does not want to increase the number of Nautilus produced.

Well some ADs have the thinking of giving any in demand watches to the VVIP customers regardless. They argue PP does not make enough of them to satisfy all and I understand the logic. It just felt bad since now I am on the other side of the fence.

I got my 5205 blue in 3 months. I think it depends on the delivery date, and shouldn't be too hard to get.

Forget modern and go vintage. This is when Patek quality was truly excellent. There are many choices, and values are quite good for anything 36mm and below.

I’m in a similar boat to you - got the sports watches sorted and now looking for a nice dress watch. I’m not looking to profit but would prefer for it to retain its value.

There might be a few new dress watch examples that can retain value well but right now none appeal to me. So we need to make a choice:

- buying new, spending a bit more, losing some money in depreciation if you sell it but still keeping our AD relationship going
- buy used, save some money, adjusting name on papers, likely some more depreciation down the road

The 5205 annual calendar is gorgeous. I saw 3 5205-13s sitting in ADs last month so seems not so hard to get in some parts. It’s a wonderful watch but if I got it I’d always think that I should have gotten a perpetual.

Right now I’m thinking of buying a really good example used perpetual calendar. The current 5327 perpetual lineup is OK but I’m not gaga. The nice thing is that they’re a great modern size. The previous gen 3940 perpetuals are awesome but feel really small. I expect 2020 will bring some new perpetuals so I might wait.

This is my current thinking - hope this helps with your decision.

Good luck mate!

Why do you think they would bring new perpetuals in 2020? I am not sure whether they would bring any completely new perpetuals as they introduced 5327 in 2016, 5320G in 2017 and 5740G in 2018. They may bring new metal variants of 5320, 5740 etc. We will definitely see some special pieces on 2025 for the 100th anniversary of Patek perpetual calendar wrist watches.

I think the 5327 has been on the shelves for at least a little while and we didn’t see any new perpetuals in 2019. I have no inside information but am very hopeful that we’ll at least see something new coming in 2020. Also it feels like we should see a 5327P? That would be really something...
