I feel dead inside.

My father passed down his 14 year old steal Submariner (date) to me when I graduated university just two weeks ago. I haven't acclimated to owning/wearing a watch like owning a phone, wallet and set of keys. Placed the watch down for a minute while I did some pull ups on the bars at a playground in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York.

My friend rushed me to leave and off we went without the watch. I realized where I had lost it within 30 minutes and it was gone.

I don't concern myself with the financial loss because of how insignificant it compares to the sentimental value the watch holds to me. I'd give anything to be reunited with the watch.

What should I do?

Sorry to hear and welcome to the forum.

I assume that you've reported your loss to the police?
Also, I would advise Rolex of the serial number.
Perhaps also notify local jewellers and pawn shops in case someone tries to sell it. Keep an eye out for it on eBay, etc. as well.
Hopefully you were insured.

This is a very unusual situation and sorry to hear about it.

It is truly a Case of Lost & Found where making out a report with NYPD could have a benefit. If the finder of the watch turns it in to police then you can be reunited with it.

I'd post some small notices at the playground offering a $5,000 reward. Yes, $5K since the sentimental value is so great. It could generate a lead from someone who might have been with the finder. Most likely the finder is local and may have been there with friend(s) - not a certainty but a possibility. If that doesn't raise anything at least the person will feel stupid if they ran to a pawn shop for a quick $2000 sale.

I'd also contact pawnshops with an open offer to buy that particular watch for $1000 over their normal asking price. Use the same "lost notice" for the playground and just change the reward part to add the offer to buy.

This last thought, I suppose, leads to a new thread like "is it safe to wear a Rolex while doing pull ups?" But could you share the reason for removing the Sub?

I've been thinking about this terrible story today.

Say an honest person finds the watch, looks around an empty playground and wonders what to do. Take it to the police? I mean, honestly, what are the chances of it just disappearing after that? Which station would you choose to take it to?

Put up a flyer in the park? But then you'd probably get all kinds of weirdos contacting you claiming it was theirs.

I believe that the person who lost the watch putting up flyers in the area is probably the best bet.

Just a crummy situation all-around.
