Thoughts on the 5270 Series? Help Please ;)

Hi all,

I've been a collector for many years focusing on three different brands (PP, ALS, FPJ) but am a little stuck on my next acquisition. I'm wanting to add a Patek 5270 to my collection and would really appreciate your thoughts...

I am considering the following models (all "non chin"):

5270G-001
5270G-018
5270G-019
5270R-001

I love the blue dial 019 BUT I already own 3 Patek blue dial pieces (including the 5170P) so this is the only thing holding me back on adding another. I'm also more of a platinum or white gold person that usually collects darker dials, so I don't own too many "R" pieces nor white dials.

The first generation 5270G-001 doesn't seem to get a lot of love... why is that? Is the fact it's missing a tachymeter scale such a big deal? In terms of collectibility long term... couldn't this be a good thing that this is the only model without it?

My "dream" 5270 would be the recently announced 5270R/1R-001 BUT I am not considering this because I do NOT want a bracelet, or a 5270P with a black dial (I know it doesn't exist). As for the 5270P Salmon dial I am NOT considering this because the salmon dial really doesn't excite me, and yes, I've tried it on so have seen it in the metal.

Price isn't really a consideration. I'd be buying any 5270 pre-owned in MINT condition (the exception might be 5270R as I know some ADs still have them).

What are your thoughts?

I'd really appreciate any input and help in making this decision :) Thank you!

5270 is less succesful than it meant to be because of high number or production and many different variationa like the one with chin and without chin etc... so that killed the value a little bit... so I guess 5270p will rest as the only valuable one since it is expected that it will discontinue quickly...

Amazing watches, but if I had to pick a watch at that price point I would have a hard time with so many options out there. Probably, if I had your budget, I would be all over the place trying to purchase one of the last few 5575 available. If you really stick to the 5270 line, I like the G on blue dial (w/o chin) or silver/white dial, but my clear favorite would be the new P.

There are no 5575's available new, only now on the used/grey market.

Russ, that is exactly what I meant: a factory sealed 5575 from the secondary market would still make my day (if I could afford it).

I have seen some on Chrono24, but I cannot play in the ~100K league.

The two I like most re the blue G and white R, I'd probably go with the R for you but on a strap.

I really like the series one but its not as nice as the 5270R

That’s my vote. It’s gorgeous. The white is too bland and the Blue you can’t read the time

The Rose is perfect

Unless you are in a rush to get a 5270, I would wait and see what other color dials are available for the 5270P. You said you don't like the salmon dial 5270P and wouldn't like the 5270P even if it came out in black dial. I am sure Patek will come out with other colored dials on the 5270P within the next few years.

I own the 5270G-001 and at the time, it was a difficult watch to obtain from an AD. Since then, there are a lot more dial choices and in many different metals, so the allure of the first 5270 produced has passed. But I still love the watch and won't sell mine unless a 5270P with a dial that I like better comes out - maybe an enamel dial like the 5370.

I DEFINITELY would be all over a black dial 5270P on croc strap. I was waiting to see what the P would be hoping it would be like the 5970P (ie, final version in platinum with a black dial), but unfortunately for me, Patek went Salmon (which I have tried on and don't personally like).

A quick question...

The 5270G-001.

It seems to be the least popular in the market (perhaps excluding the chin versions).

Does a tachymeter make that much difference (ie, as found on the 5270G-018)?

I hope Patek will come out with a 5270P black dial. However they already have a black dial 5271P, with diamond baguettes. Have you tried this 5271P on? I got to try it on a year ago and it is quite nice, although I definitely prefer it without the diamond baguettes.

I highly doubt the lack of a tachymeter affects the popularity of the 5270G-001. As I mentioned, when it was first produced, it was very popular and hard to find watch. Just do a search here for the watch around 2012-2013. The fact is that Patek made so many different versions of the 5270G and in general, people are more fascinated with the latest releases and long forget the earlier release.

Only thing the 5970 have over the 5270 is the production number. Patek had only a limited number of lemania-based movements to work with and could not make more 5070/5970 than they had movements for. So technically, I feel the 5270/5170 is more advanced than the 5970/5070. However collectors love rarity and care less about technical improvements. So that is why the 5970/5070 is more popular than the 5270/5170.

Yes, I have tried the 5271P on and while the dial is perfect, the diamond bezel doesn't do it for me as it's just too over the top (imo)... I own the 5170P with diamond hour markers and that to me is the perfect implementation of diamonds, but that's as far as I'll personally go.

I also suspect Patek will discontinue the 5270 line once these 2018 P and R versions are done so I don't expect to see a 5270P black dial... and while there is also the 5204P, I actually prefer the dial layout of the 5270.
