Help me decide on my next Patek

First time post on this Forum. Currently own a 5146G and 5711 (SS/Blue). Looking for next PP purchase and need some advice - the Aquanaut has really grown on me - I have access to a 5164r at my Authorized Dealer (currently available). Love the rose gold, and do not currently have anything in this color in my collection. Also have my eye on the new 5968a - love the playfulness/irreverence of the watch, but would be a second SS Nautilus (and this one would be a wait - not sure exactly how long). And for the Grand Finale, I can get the new 5270P (no timetable, but my AD is getting 3 with 1 spoken for and likely the second or third going to me). Obviously the 5270 is a totally different ballgame and in a different league to the other 2 - kind of a holy grail. Just not sure how well received it is/will be, especially with the general chatter of the 5270 not being on par with the 5970.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Great pair, can't do better.

I would look at other brands

They are quite different watches:

The 5270P Salmon dial is a true grail watch but obviously also more delicate and not to be worn everywhere.

The aquanauts are more rugged / sporty (even in rose gold). Aesthetically I would take the 5164 (any metal) over the 5968a as the wings / ears on both sides makes for a more balanced case (more like the Nautilus) and I am not a big fan of the orange hands, but then again I am slightly biased

Go for the 5270P! Special watch that is in a total different league compared to the Aquanaut or Nautilus.

5968A. Its different than what you have. The salmon is a cool idea, but crazy money.

Had a chance to preview the new 5270p in Geneva Salon. The 5270p is mighty impressive, and I don't even like Salmon dial. The new arab numerals address one of the main criticism of the 5270 series, ie the dial is unbalance ( bottom heavy ). If budget not an issue, go for it. It's the next level.

Consider the 5164R or 5968A if you want to add an Aquanaut to your collection.

Have you seen the 5270P, if you love it then it is the perfect choice.

Can you get hold of a 5740? If not then the 5270 for sure.

Personally, there is little reason to rush into a 5270P as you won't struggle to get one on the market.

Make sure you see it in the metal as thats the only way you'll know if you love it... just because salmon dials are rare doesn't mean you'll love one on your wrist. I really really wanted to love it but after trying it on, just didn't.

The 5740 on the other hand... amazing! Try that first as I think you'll prefer that over the 5270P based on your other watch interests.

Firstly - thanks to all for your thoughtful comments/suggestions. A few follow-up questions, some of which may seem contradictory:

1. I prefer the 5164r over the 5167r - personal preference. I like the idea of the world time and do travel some, so would use it. However, the 5164r does not seem to be as well regarded. Is that a fair assessment?

2. I like the idea of the 5968a, but does not solve my issue of wanting something with a different metal (i.e. rose gold vs ss and white gold I currently have),

3. I have not seen the 5270p (salmon) in person. So that is tough to commit to - I did love the 5270r when I tried it at my AD, but was a little concerned that the 5270 was generally not that well received (has that changed since the "chin" was removed)? eviperman - Point well taken on the salmon dial - I must be honest and say that I have bought into the "marketing" somewhat and the fact that this will be a rare piece. Not sure that is a reason to buy however,

4. Agreed the 5740 is outstanding, but again have the issue (i) the metal (white gold), and (ii) another Nautilus, whereas the Aquanaut/5270 are totally different.

Apologies if I am rambling, but as you can see, am having some difficulty with the next acquisition.

5164 has had a huge resurgence here this past year so no issues there, and generally it's preferred to the 67 now the price delta issues are not a factor any more.

As for the 5740, well it is another Nautilus but maybe it is the Nautilus so sell the SS one if two's too many I say and get the 64.

PERFECT idea.

Get the 5740 AND the 5164 (and sell your 5711 so you only have THE Nautilus). Good thinking AK :)

1) In general, for a sports watch model, the SS version is more popular than the PM version, especially if there is a significant price difference. That is true with Rolex as well as with Patek. At the $50K price range, there are a lot of choices besides the 5164R.

2) If you don't want a SS watch, don't worry about what others say. Just trust your instinct and move on.

3) If you have not seen the 5270P, I would make sure you try one on your wrist first before committing to buying a watch at this price. It will be at ADs soon enough and IMO it will be available at a discount, at least in the US. There is no rush with this watch purchase. For serious Patek collectors, a perpetual calendar chronograph (PCC) will always be a major piece in your collection, at one time or another.

4) Once again if you want a RG piece, rather than a WG or SS piece, don't follow other people's advice to do otherwise.

My advice is try on the pieces and get the one you want. It is useful to get opinions here. But no one knows your tastes like you do. At the end of the day, it is a watch you will wear on your wrist

I like the 5270P best of the ones you're looking at.
