Went to Rolex Boutique earlier this week—basically I was politely told there was no chance of ever getting one due to the scarcity. I told the rep that I love the brand but they’re killing a huge swath of their customer base by playing this game.

The market value is what the grey dealers are selling it for right now. MSRP is completely irrelevant unless you've got an "in" with an AD.

Yes, the PM versions are not that much more expensive. I don't agree with many here who state the PM versions will hold their value better. That presumption is based on the value of the materials and original MSRP, rather than demand. The SS models are in much, much higher demand; it's not hard to get a PM version. That's not going to change. It's to the point where the 5 digit SS Daytonas have increased in value substantially.

I wanted one so I paid the market price. If you're comfortable with the slight possibility that they'll one day decrease to near-MSRP values, then go for it. Otherwise, accept that you'll likely never get one at MSRP or just go for it like I did.

The 116500 "bubble" isn't popping anytime soon. This is a completely different category than overpriced blnrs/lvcs IMO.

If the SS Daytona C is the only Rolex you plan on buying your best hope is the grey market. If not, you will be better served in the long run by having an established AD relationship.

Take a breath, walk away for a month. Come back next month if you still feel strongly about it then buy it.

Great advice. Pause and see how it feels later.

Reviving this thread. Still no Daytona but wanted to hear you guys chime back in now that the Daytona is hovering at 22k bnib versus 17k a year ago when we were chatting.

Can this thing go to 30k by 2020??? It’s getting ridiculous. Can’t imagine it passing a PM version in market price.

I bought mine for under $16K and traded it in towards the Platona. It wasn't BNIB it was a month old. It was great to have but not as great as the Platona.

If you want it then yes. Do it, you will forget about the price and should enjoy the watch every time you put it on. I personally would not pay a premium but then again, there is not a watch I want badly enough. Knowing my personality, if I want something I will do what it takes to get it so I understand where you are coming from.

No second thoughts if you want it, go and get it. It's a beautiful watch, a classic. Good luck.

he's right! go for the 18 year old watch instead. Oh wait, that one is going for $35k lol.

Yeah, life is short. Bite the bullet and do it! Over a lifetime the premium you pay now will be nothing.

OP, have you ever actually seen a ceramic Daytona in real life? Have you ever tried one on? If not, you're talking about wanting a watch so bad that you're willing to pay 80% more than premium, based on pictures on the internet.

That doesn't sound like wise and thoughtful behavior to me. I like my Daytona a lot, but I've known many many many people who bought a Daytona, thought "meh" and then moved on to something else.

Don't let the FOMO drive you crazy.

As a matter of policy, I will only pay over MSRP for a watch model that has been discontinued/vintage. This model will be around for another 8 years so be patient, another 5000 of these to hit the market will surely satisfy those who remain panicked.

Yes I have handled it in the metal. It’s wonderful. I just don’t think the Daytona will ever become reasonable on the secondary market at this stage.

Buy now or you can wait until next Daytona which you’ll never get at MSRP anyway.

Good on you for trying. Buy it, if you're comfortable.

I got my previous version on the cheap during a lull in demand.

If you love the watch and plan on keeping it for years I say do it. Even if the SS Daytona market cools a little and you decide to sell, I doubt you would lose more than a few thousand dollars. A question to ask yourself is: if you are able to buy one at MSRP in a few years, would you regret spending the extra money to get one today?

What do you think would happen to the resale of the 116500ln if they do something with the movement on the SS ceramic at Basel world? (eg longer power reserve per GMT)

Think hard about it and don't get emotional about a watch that is not limited production, not precious metal and the aftermarket price WILL come down eventually. Some people on here who tell you to buy want the price to maintain so they can continue to profit. Think about it long and hard.
Rolex could easily raise prices on these so what if you get on a waitlist and by the time you get the watch in 3 to 5 years the msrp might be $18k or more than what you will pay buying grey now!
