I've read that, or words to that effect, a million times on watch forums.

It's no less true in this case than it is in any case.

Whoever paid that amount for the watch apparently knows more about the watch than we do.

Either that, or he's lost his mind.
I'm going with door #2!!

There must have been at least two of them.

It would have had to have been Michaelangelo’s watch he wore whilst painting the Sistine Chapel for it to be worth that much!
For goodness sake....the worlds gone mad.

I believe it was bought to flip it to a grey dealer.

Exceptional 6538’s with the regular dial have been trading close to $500k for a while. This one has the insanely rare explorer dial AND red depth rating. It’s a unicorn. The back story with the painter dad is not the driving factor here. Is this crazier than a Daytona selling for $5.9 mill?

The importance of this piece as a reflection of the limitless cash driving the vintage market cannot be overstated...

Well said

That is just perfect. I would not have been able to come up with that gem. Rofl 🤣

X2. That piece does absolutely nothing for me. I guess I’m just an uncouth barbarian.

It will come up quite nicely with a new case, hands, dial, movement, and bracelet. Money well spent.

Does this mean the original bezel is worth $20 million now?

If a painter's Sub is worth $1mil, does this mean a plumber's Sub is with 2x?

At least put a bezel on it and a strap that fits. Lame.

Whoever paid that should have their head examined.

Does anyone know what that model sold for new? I always enjoy seeing things of high quality go up in value over time.

I seem to remember a vintage Patek Philippe selling for over a million dollars a few years ago

Wow, when I picture a 1 million dollar Rolex, that isn’t what comes to mind...

My painter has a beat up Timex. Probably worth at least $100,000.
