In the latest PP magazine there is an article on the 5196, which states that this model is referred to as "Le Grande Calssique" at Patek.

And you would be wasting your breath, as I didn’t claim something along the lines of, “If you want the absolute best, buy a Patek.” Reasoning often fails to overcome, if not quantifiably valid, authentic emotional attachment. Meaning, I can convince myself that other watches are better finished, have movements that aren’t too small for their case backs, have exhibition case backs, are cheaper, and fewer are made per year, but that doesn’t mean the desire to wear a Patek will go away. Better for me means wearing the watches I want to own.

Watches are a very personal choice. I looked at the offerings from Vacheron and Lange before buying a 5196r. For me they do not offer anything comparable in this price range. I would love a VC Historique 1955 too but it's almost double the price of a 5196r.
