PP 5711 or AP RO Panda chrono?
hi all, i could use some advice!
i'd like to finalize my collection (for the time being) with a strong piece. currently i am considering: - a PP 5711, w/ white dial - a 38mm AP RO chrono unfortunately i would need to buy in grey mkt, having no AP/PP AD relations to speak of. any comment, opinion or experience in this would be very appreciated- thanks!

Looks like you already have a 15300, so 5711 for variety. But aren’t they at rather different price points on the market?

If price is not a consideration I would go 5711. I prefer the white to the blue dial though.

thank you both!
Fenrira, yes the AP would be 1/2 the price of course, and it's grey:retail is 1.5 instead of 3... 1William, price as such is not the main issue, but i admit that if the value would crash i would confirm the old saying "a fool and his money are quickly parted". i guess that's a common problem for many at this point..

The price is totally different levels man. The truth is I will pick none, but between the 2 5711 it is.
The 38 is not an in-house movement IIRC, the date position is wrong, always in the shadow on the 41 ROC. The 5711 is the supposedly ‘gold standard’, though that’s a debate for another day lmao |

5711 of course, the current market price does not reflect the actually amazing piece this is - at around 100k USD grey market, it's peanuts compared to its real potential value which should be around 500k USD according to my deep knowledge of horology...or maybe 732k USD

Noob question: will the irrational 5711 prices cool down a little when the successor may be announced (next april?) and all the Instagram-fed people will want the new iteration?
Also, as travelling takes off and people divert their watch budgets to other activites (experiences, travelling, etc), it may put pressure on global watch prices. (This is a pure theory/bet that may be totally wrong). If experts say yes, I would go 5711 but wait next year. (Anyway right before xmas, it is the worst time to buy. But the best to sell. Jan or feb are better to buy as they are usually slow months.) |

I think that with your Rolex collection, you'd got the everyday watch wear covered. You also own an AP. Since you seem to imply "going big" with a "Strong piece" in this case I'd go for the Nautilus.

5711 hands down...
Not sure if the AP side will have different answer, but definitely the 5711 on my end. |

No, successor will be completely unattainable and pull the 5711 further into stratosphere.

At grey pricing, neither. Been at this a looooong time and congrats as you gave a great budget! Be smart and look deeper at independents. I'd rather have something more unique at that price level than seeing yet another typical PP or AP at watch gatherings. This is a Patek board so...
Again, please do more research and think smarter. You have much to choose from.

If you have some patience I believe the watch market will hit a down cycle at some point and the 5711 will be available at a less obscene price. Just as the financial markets correct, the watch market will also eventually correct. With some foresight you can keep funds in reserve and take advantage of that inevitable downturn. But if you can’t resist the urge, and you want it now, and you have money to throw around, then by all means make it rain a pile of cash and make yourself happy.

Isn’t aqua plus ROC vs 5711 a more apples to apples spend?
I’d rather that combo over the gray price of 5711. Also, I think wrist size should dictate outcome here. |

thanks again for the additional comments!
> Also, I think wrist size should dictate outcome here. interesting angle- my wrist is 16.5 cm / 6.5 inches. The 39mm RO 15300 is on the larger side for my taste. Never tried the 5711.. i have tried the PP 3800 though and it wore too small.

I fully expect that this is not going to be seen as the popular or correct decision... but I really never felt comfortable wearing my 5711 anymore. I wear all my watches regularly, and that was just way too much of the watch budget to have, well, just sitting there. Also weighing on the decision, I bought the 5711 in the grey, and it was my only modern piece where my name was not on the papers. So when the call came, I parted with 5711. The 38mm ROC is my favorite watch, and I absolutely love wearing it much more than I ever loved the nautilus. And for what it's worth, in the wild I've seen more 5711 out there than I have 38mm ROC. Now back to the uninterrupted roll of "5711" replies... |

thanks to everyone again, for the interesting and well grounded opinions & viewpoints.
also interesting that someone else had exactly the same dilemma (5711 vs AP 38mm)! after some consideration i pulled the trigger today on this particular 5711, and i will pick it up later this week :)
