There is an article on Bulang and Sons about these with photos of Haywoods personal 5500s, I would do find 10 differences between this example and these watches to determine authenticity:

My best 2 tips if you want a real 5500 Explorer:
Tip #1 walk away from any seller who provides images that aren't crystal clear and show all the text on the dial, you will want at least one image of the serial number too Tip #2 consider a 1016 |

Thanks - I'd actually read this article...but didn't make the connection. The differences are very subtle to the inexperienced eye

I have seen a picture of the serial number, that and the caseback date the watch to 1968.... Obviously the dial is in question however! Yes.... unfortunately the 5500 looks like a minefield. I'd say about 75% of the examples I have seen either for sale or sold (both privately and via dealer's) look very much like this. I wonder how many real 5500's there are actually out there....?!? I think I'll pass |

All I would say on the matter is :take your time, do as much research as possible, listen to what experts in their fields have to say, buy the seller...good luck in your quest.

The OP is lucky Haywood took the time to consider the watch and give it the thumbs down. His decision to pass on the watch is sensible. The 5500 Explorer is a rare beast....proceed with caution. Oh and do you research!
