What’s the link to yachting just don’t see it. Bi directional bezel makes it yachting related?

Word on the web is that the yachtmaster was going to be the sub’s replacement, however it is uncertain whether this is true or not. The case is similar enough to the 5 digit sub for this to be plausible. Albeit a more luxurious Sub.

Word is also that the name yachtmaster was already trademarked by Rolex a while before, and was the name choice for this watch to have, as a stand-alone model. The consensus was, as a sub replacement it might not go down too well with the sub market. The bi directional bezel is used to calculate time, time between two buoys for example.

There’s definitely more resemblance to the the sub than an actual dedicated yachting watch like the yachtmaster II which is definitely the more fitting name for that watch that is designed for yachting.

I love the bi directional bezel as I use it frequently when I’m working so it suits me even better than the Sub’s uni directional bezel.

How do you like this pair? I’ve been thinking a flipping towards a blue dial to pair with my TT YM for a long time.

Bi-directional bezel makes it yachting related?
The smooth bi-directional bezel (as opposed a diver's notchy unidirectional bezel) is supoosed to help with two things: easily track elapsed time between buoys in a regatta (by setting the triangle of the bezel to the minute hand) and assist with the countdown to the race (by tracking the red second hand with the triangle of the bezel). Being butter smooth and bi-diirectinal makes it much quicker than say a Sub.

I tell ya, these photos don’t do it justice especially with the restrictive photo size/resolution.

By the way how do you guys get full size photos like that, I seem to have to crop everything down to pass the size restrictions?

My understanding is that the watch was developed to mark Rolexes association with offshore sailing around the globe. Over the years the company has invested heavily in sailing having been the principle sponsor in famous races such as the Sydney to Hobart and Fastnet. The Yachtmaster 2 is a further development having a regatta start timer incorporated into it much like other watch manufacturers have done such as omega. Tag heuer and Timex to name a few. Interestingly. The Rolex ym2 is by far the most sophisticated of all of them.

I am not really a fan of YM2. The dial is busy. The other YM or YM 1 (idk how to call it) is nice and I like the different options. The OF. on RG is great and will be my 1st Rolex soon. I feel the OF models have great versatility with what you can wear with them.

Very nice. Agreed. This is the most underrated Rolex reference.

Not an owner anymore, but it was one of my favourite references when I owned it. Love the platinum dial. Mine was a 16622.

First Rolex Purchase Today!

Had choice of the YM Rhodium or GMT ll TT/RG Rootbeer. Both were great, but I chose YM as a first. Amazingly comfortable.
GMT was also stunning. May be next time.

Went through a similar choice of ym40 vs gmt vs sub and went with the ym40 in rhodium, love the smaller more elegant case, the superior comfort and the extra bling and that sunburst dial

Yes please, can’t believe I want to tempt myself but this watch is so comfortable I wouldn’t mind adding a different version of it
