They are fundamentally two different watches, the fact that they are chronographs from the biggest watch brands is just coincidental.

The Daytona (especially in white) is an unmistakable icon for every watch enthusiast and their relatives. It is very well-built, and the striking good looks adds to that complete package. Excellent movement blah blah, it is a watch that I put on when I want to impress others (but not WIS, because, come on, who wears a Daytona to a GTG?), and when I feel fancy.

The 321 is a completely different beast. I wear it when I want to feel connected to history -- it's a silent confidence that I get when it's on my wrist. No one, except the professional lugs examiner, would notice that I have something special on. It's the student in class who knows the answer, but doesn't raise her hands up to get credit. Being a manual watch, it takes more care/time to wind it each morning, and somehow feels more delicate.

It seems to me that someone would be attracted to either one, or both. There's just no point to convince each other that the 321 is better, or vice versa.
Why do you seriously doubt people are cross shopping. Are you assuming that if you can buy one, you’d buy both?

To your other point, I agree. They are both great watches. My personal preference is the 321. it’s not a better watch but it is the one that does it for me, and that’s all it should be about.

Because in my experience, people who want the Daytona want the Daytona, and not a 321, and people into the 321, want the 321 and not the Daytona.

Then there's a group of us who wants both, and is fortunate to get them.

tl;dr people want what they want.

you may be right but There’s a third group of people who want/like one of them and would take the first they could get - both being hard to get, beautiful watches.

In any case, I’m not trying to make the case for one over the other.

Let’s leave it there

With all the hype around the Daytona the last couple of years I think the Ed White is the nicer watch to own image wise. The Daytona is so recognized today, as is the Nautilus and Royal Oak. The 321 could go under the radar for a standard speed master. It’s all the better.
