I like the slightly more robust looking case of the new model a bit more although either would be nice!!! I'm more likely to go for the two tone version which I'm seriously considering going after.

One day pass and I starting to like the new Explorer more. I find the new lug to be more balance and fit with new bracelet more.

Great pics and a solid review. I think he summed it up best “you don’t buy this watch for others you buy it for yourself”..... I think this model fits in real nice as a lower profile watch.

I can’t wait to see this on a brown leather strap!

Here’s a question: Anyone who’d tried This watch and is also familiar with the 38mm GP Laureato? That was absolutely, positively, going to be my next watch, until I saw this. Curious if the bracelet is “dainty” by comparison to that, or just too old 20mm Rolex bracelets.

It's a new, steel professional Rolex. What did you expect?

Rolex going back to the 36mm size for the Explorer feels like the brand has given up on the model as a tool watch, catering to market demand and the hype. While every sports model is each year larger and unfortunately thicker as well, the Explorer is going backwards and further widening the size gap between the Explorer I and II.

Pretty much the opposite of what reverting back to 36mm means to me, but we’re all entitled to our opinions.

IMO 36mm is perfect for a field watch, so comfortable.

Yes of course! And I’m certain the new 36mm is a wonderful watch! It’s been widely acclaimed and I do feel lonely out there; probably because I got attached to my 39mm Explorer over years!

Yes I agree. The 39mm was Rolex briefly responding to the fashion of the larger watch. Now its returned to the original design size that it was for the majority of its existence, albeit with a bolder dial etc.

I had the 39 mm mk1 and mk2. I loved them both, but I thought the mk2 was damn near perfection.

Then I picked up the steel and two tone 36mm Explorers. They look really small in my watch case, feel really light in the hand and the taper seems a little thin at 14mm…..

And then I put it on my wrist and they are perfection!

These are not for everybody, but for those who are open to the smaller size will really be rewarded. They’ve someone made them feel both modern in build quality and vintage in proportions at the same time. I absolutely love them!

I LOVED the 39mm Explorer and regret so much selling it for something else. Glad to hear someone who thought 39mm Explorere was a perfect watch to like the 36mm Explorer. I'll have to check and try out a dummy model at least. Maybe I'll get one too.

The classic 36mm case/20mm bracelet ratio was what gave Rolex watches a unique look for decades, but, it was really never about case size, but, rather dial size.

The Rolex sport watch line looked much more cohesive through the 5-digit (and 114270) series, because the Exp, Exp II, GMT and SubDate used to all have the same dial size and 20mm bracelet (regular Sub and SD's had slightly smaller dials, but close). The only difference was the little bit of extra case outside of the dials to accommodate the various bezels. So, if you're using the dial, rather than case, to judge ratios with the bracelet, they're all about the same, and that somewhat modular aspect of the sport line being based off of the Explorer was really cool.

I'm really glad Rolex went back to 36mm with the 124270 Explorer, but, due to the 19mm bracelet, I don't love that it still has the more "lollipop" proportions of the 214270.

I have picked one up and I love how under the radar it is, I get why it is 36mm and it is right from an historical point of view that they have gone to 36mm. I like it as it is now beside the proportions of the 39mm we’re just off to me.

However, if the Explorer was 37.5mm, wow what a perfect watch it would be.

I went to an AD last night to see and try on an (exhibition) Exp36. I desperately wanted to love it, but... the bracelet is just too damn dainty.

Why, Rolex, WHY?!? Was it too much to use the same damn case and bracelet you ALREADY make for the OP and DJ?

Utterly ridiculous.
