Warned about wearing my Rolex on a treadmill

OK, First, an admission: I run on a treadmill. Yeah yeah, all you hardcore runners can now spit on my image, I get it. A TRUE runner enjoys the outdoors, fresh air yadda yadda yadda. Bas, Mountain Runner, all of you go ahead, flame me. I just prefer running indoor on a treadmill. Today I did 2.5 miles, started at 6.5 MPH and finished at 8.5, I’m pretty proud of myself But this thread is not about my fitness goals.

I am visiting my mother in another state so paid for a one-day admission to a local gym. I didn’t trust leaving my watch in a locker so wore it while running. A uhm... ‘gentleman” kept looking at me from the side. Now, people staring at me with strange looks is not at all unusual for me, People usually cross the street to get away from me.... But moving on, I though for sure he was looking at my sub, which was a little disconcerting. After I finished! I was sitting on a bench recovering when he approached me. “Excuse me” (he was very nice). That’s a Rolex isn’t it? I nodded. Then he said... well, I’ll paraphrase. I should never run on a treadmill with a Rolex on because the electromagnetism put off by the treadmill will ruin my watch... And I think also cause the Earth to split open or something.

O.... K.......

However, and this may come as a shock to a lot of you, I am not an expert on everything. So, thought i would present it to Bas, and any of you other technical type watch enthusiasts. Is there really a concern here?

No concern. But be sure to thank the intellectual chap for his thoughtful warning.

Yeah... Whenever I hear something that far off I usually just say, "Really? Thanks for letting me know!" I wouldn't know where to start the discussion.

Well he cares so well intentioned so nice. Now, do the motors on a treadmill pump out enough juice to be scared of what may hurt a watch? I'm an eletrical engineer and I have no idea.

What's the gauss rating for your watch?

I think he was right, but for the wrong reasons...

I wouldn't wear one running at all because I don't think the rapid, constant arm swings are particularly good for an automatic watch. Sweat build-up probably not great for the gaskets, either.

So, "no automatics while working out" is probably the rule I'd go by.

But let's get back to the real issue: The seeming lack of trust you have in your own mother to watch your watch in your absence .

Run home from work tonight wearing my Explorer.

Been wearing a smart watch to work of late, but that meant little or no wrist time for the Explorer. Was going to take it off and keep it in my bag, then realized it’s just a watch at the end of the day, albeit an expensive one. I think it survived.

I've logged many miles on a treadmill and on the road wearing my submariner. 16 years worth and no issues so far.

I work around High magnetic fields all day, My watches get shaken violently all the time. With a modern Rolex you have no worries. Omega and Rolex are tested to 5000g's. Jogging is not a problem. And the small magnetic field emitted by a treadmill motor is nil. and will not affect a Modern Rolex. I wore my DJ (3235) in fields that measured 3000 gauss. It was never a issue.

It won't bother your watch one bit.
Were it me, I would never wear one to a gym anyway, but that is just me.

So is that how my watch got magnetized? I should have known. I guess I should have worn the Milgauss!!! The field from the treadmill motor is pretty low; by the same reasoning you shouldn't run a vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, or anything else with any electric motor. I'd stay away from Teslas as well!!

I am a 40 yr runner, who has cut waaaay back on my mileage, due to recurring injuries. Running on a treadmill keeps my injuries at bay vs pavement. May not be true for everyone, but for me it is.

That being said, I do fast uphill walking and running a treadmill with my auto-magic watches (Omega, Rolex) and no issues.

Run on, friend!

I’ve remained loyal to the Rolex brand because I have hadn’t a problem with any of my watches with how I active I am. The best part of Rolex is its ability to handle whatever you throw its’ way.

Um, you do realize that automatic watches are actually wound by constant arm swings, right?

Also, Rolexes are used for diving (in salt water no less!), mountain climbing and other rigorous activities where rapid arm motions and shock to the mechanism are fairly standard, so doubt some sweat is going to do any harm to those fragile gaskets and rotors.

SHOCK-RESISTANCE
A selection of test watches face shock-resistance examinations that are equivalent to 5,000 g (1 g is equal to the force of gravity at the Earth's surface) to ensure our complex mechanical mechanisms are also extraordinarily robust. Not just for everyday use but for active sports such as golf and sailing.

This is from the online Omega 300M ad. I have read that Rolex is also subjected to the same shock test. Treadmill, no problem.

Gee....maybe you should treat it like your car and get the watch’s oil changed every 3,000 miles or so.

No worries Paul. You should tell him you wrap it in aluminum foil at night so it reduces the transference so you’re all good. Also wrap your head to keep the government censors out.

FWIW, I've worn my watches all winter while running on my newest treadmill without any deleterious affect. I guess horse pucky is the correct assessment of your advice giver!!! Now for the big question, what treadmill do you own? For me it's a Sole!!! Seems like there's a new thread here somewhere, Your Rolex and Your Treadmill!!! How about a photo?
