Right now it is the SD43. It is the Rolex Diver I have always wanted when I owned Submariners and DSSD. The size is perfect for me. The case, dial, bezel, bracelet, red text, clasp and the cyclops work so well. If I only had one it would be the SD43.

Updated DSSD. Its the ultimate dive/tool watch that is true to the heritage of rolex. It pushes the envelope like rolex did in inventing and improving the water resistant watch.

As much as I LOVE the new sky dweller RG with anthracite dial I cant bring myself to buy a PM Rolex. Just feel like the history of Rolex tool watches should stay SS.

Which model is your ultimate Rolex?

I’m wearing my favorite, but would love to add the following two models someday:

- GMT Master II Pepsi (M serial 3186)
- Daytona WG steel dial OysterFlex

Those along with my SD43, the above additions would be my dream air, land, sea.

I see two questions there as if its one question bundled it will be completely subjective to each individuals personal preferance.

What makes me think "this is Rolex"?

That would have to be the dateJust ... simply because of the history behind it and the rise of the company and its different models from there.

What makes most non-watch people, and some watch people think "this is Rolex" would see the Sub at the top of any poll I'd guess .... simply put, it is a design classic like zippo lighters, Porsche 911 etc ... easily identified.

As for the question about only having one, I'll base that poll on a watch that can fit in easily to every day use and dress up or down to suit, without any real issue, so with that in mind I'd say a sub, I managed to get on with life without any worries when I had only my SD, and since the SD and sub are one in the same apart from the depth rating, I'd default to sub. It could be argued that a GMT would be better as it has that GMT function, but I'm factoring in that not everyone travels as much as to justify that complication on a single watch owned and wouldnt miss it for the most part, same as the depth rating of the SD.

Whew .... hope that made sense.

Now .... if you are asking 'me' to get rid of all my watches and have only one, a single Rolex, and which would it be that would keep me happy ..... I'd most likely go back to the DJ and be quite content that it covers all bases. Time, date, waterproof, steel, under the radar, not out of place on my wrist when in to my old age (I'm assuming only 1 meant forever ) and easily affordable when taking in to account the movement is the same as in the sub.

So .... my short answer .... DJ 36mm

If I had to pick one for the rest of my life I would keep my WG DD2. A close second would be a WG SkyDweller with black dial.
